Classie Lassies Lightning 10U Softball team wins National Championship.

The Classie Lassies who won the State title in the first week of July travelled to Harrisburg PA to compete for the Eastern National Championship held August 2-5. The team who plays locally in Wynantskill NY also won the Hudson Mohawk travel league. They competed against teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York. The Classie Lassies began the final day of play undefeated when they played another undefeated team from NY who not yet been scored upon. The Lightning suffered their first defeat with a score of 3 to 2 in a sudden death finish. Classie Lassie went on to play the second game of the day against the Pennsylvania Shooting Stars and won 3 to 2 behind the strong pitching of Shannon Johnson who already threw a no-hitter in the second game of tournament play. Annamarie Bertrand delivered a single in the top of the seventh inning to to tie the game and Kelly Donnally crossed the plate with the winning run. The team then advanced into the National Chamipionship game where they had to beat the Elmira Lady Rebels who came off a rest period. The Lightning had to beat the Rebels twice to win the title in the double elimination tournament. In the first game of the Championship Louise Germinario scored on a squeeze bunt by Kelly Donnelly to win the game and force a second game for the Championship. In the final and deciding contest the game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Caroline Wood singled and scored on a single by Louisa Germinerio with the games only run, a victory, and National title for the Classie Lassie Lightning. Shannon Johnson carried a perfect game until the one out in the last inning when the catcher for the Rebels hit one off Johnson's arm for an infield single. Kelly Donnelly was the ignitor for the Lassie's offense. The title was a total team effort both in the offense and defense. Johnson finished with 69 strike outs in 43 innings of work to earn 8 victories for the Lightning. The Lightning finished their season with a record of 39 and 7. The team was managed by Matt Johnson and coached by Mo Germinerio, Kristen Castle, John Anthony, and Pat Bertrand.
