On August 17, 1862, Mordicai J. W. AMBROSE enlisted as a Chaplain in the 7th Kentucky Cavalry.  He resigned on September 6, 1863 due to health problems.  He was appointed Hospital Chaplain of Volunteers on September 28, 1863 and accepted the appointment on September 29, 1863.  The appointment was revoked on July 14, 1864, not having been confirmed by the Senate.   From April 23, 1864 to July 1864 he was on duty at Cumberland Hospital in Tennessee.

On October 17, 1864, Mordecai enrolled in the 47th Kentucky Mounted Infantry.   He was discharged, along with the other Staff Officers, on December 26, 1864.

Mordecai James William AMBROSE applied for a Disability Pension on April 24, 1895 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.
