Remarks:
One of only three shows on my list that I actually attended. I flew into New York on the Saturday before, and spent Sunday attuning myself to the New York feel of things. Monday evening was spent in Brooklyn, Tuesday at Irving Plaza and Wednesday at the Bowery Ballroom. Three unforgettable shows, one unique experience happily enriched by some terrific people I met during the shows: it’s a Mats thing.
This show, the final night of the tour, opened with Grandpaboy playing a near flawless 5 song medley, the start of a 140 minute set that blew the audience away. Paul gave an out of this world performance, played out of skin, kicked a@@, etc., Heck, he even played “Within your reach”. As if all that wasn’t enough, “Crackle & Drag” was given the perfect treatment. The atmosphere was unbelievable. Paul was fantastic.
Afterwards, despite being a month on the road, he took time to spend an hour with fans by the famous tour bus. It was late, we were drained and soaked with sweat; the old Chinatown district was eerily unwelcoming, the rain added a heavy mood to the darkness and summer was losing its perennial fight against the chilly north-eastern autumn. Its not the poster and postcard he autographed, but something else. I’m still very happy. Thanks, Paul.
