Remarks:

I wasn’t there for this show or tour. So here are some reviews from people who were there:

Review 1: Hey all, sorry this took so long to write, but on Sept. 12 KFOG hosted a live broadcasted private concert with Paul and the entire band at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. They picked 10 very lucky people to witness the show in a very closed setting and I was one of the lucky 10. IT WAS AWESOME! He played a shorter version of his set that he has been playing on his tour. He played for about an hour and ten minutes. After he finished his set he started walking out of the studio like he was going to leave for good, but then the crowd started yelling for him to come back. Paul turned around and mumbled, “I’m coming back, I need to use the bathroom.”

I brought all kinds of neat things for him to sign. He signed my I’m in Trouble 45, the Eventually CD cover, my 14 Songs limited edition book, and best of all my Rickenbacker guitar. I almost talked him into playing it during his set. He asked if it was a 6 string or a 12 string and if it was in tune. I replied, “it’s never in tune.” He laughed, but ended up not playing it. He did hold it though. It was an incredible night.

Billie Joe, from Green Day, was also there. He is a huge Replacements fan. Oh, one more thing about the night, when he signed the I’m in Trouble 45 he seemed really impressed about seeing the 45 like he hasn’t seen one for a while. He pulled it out of the sleeve and started to carefully scrutinize it. He tried to remember what they had scratched into the groove. If you hold it just right you can see the words “power trash” etched in. I never knew that was on there until he showed me.

The following night I saw him at the Fillmore in San Francisco. It was an incredible show. I wanted to correct the other person who wrote in about the show, he said one of the songs was called King of America when actually the title is Stain Yer Blood. He again sat on the steps of his bus and signed autographs after the show. I went up to him again and thanked him for signing all of my stuff from the night before and for not getting impatient. He was truly a great person. He told me to hold on to the 45, but get rid of the guitar. I thought that was funny. Oh, one more thing about that 45. When he was signing the cover he drew a halo around Bob’s head. I think he really misses him. Anyway. a great two days. I can’t wait for a new record (which he said to a friend of mine, “it might be sooner than you think”) and the next tour. Feel free to email me at GRandall@FairIsaac.com or unbalance@aol.com with any news or questions about my meeting the greatest songwriter of our generation.

Review 2: I too got to go to the private KFOG live broadcast at Fantasy Studios. I am the girlfriend of the person who also wrote about it and I just had to throw in a few words of my own. It was really a once in a lifetime experience. All in all there was about a total of 25 people in the studio during his performance. I, of course, was sitting directly in front of him.

He sounded really great. During one of the commercial breaks the guy sitting next to me was yelling at Paul to get him to give him the towel that he was using to wipe the sweat off of his forehead (I thought I was a big fan). Paul being the sport he is graciously handed over the towel. He even signed it for him after the show. The guy in return gave Paul a first edition album of Big Star’s first album. A pretty good trade.

During the show whenever Paul would begin one of his songs the KFOG DJ would like very confused and kept looking at this piece of paper he had in his hand. We later discovered that Paul wasn’t following the set list that he had given him. Sounds about right, doesn’t it? After Paul was done playing and he returned from the bathroom he hung out with his eager fans. I got the feeling that although he was being very giving, open, and friendly that he just going through the motions, like he was numb to his surroundings.

I suppose he might start feeling a little anonymous after awhile especially when dealing with very excited and crazy fans! I had all of these meaningful and expressive thoughts that I wanted to tell him, but when I got my chance I acted more like a starstruck 12 year old. He was so wonderful and patient about signing all of my stuff and taking a few photos. It really made my whole year. I just hope that I get another opportunity to say everything I wanted to say. Anyway, the concert was fantastic and the concert at the Fillmore the next night was terrific as well.
