Note:
Unfortunately, I've picked up faulty copies in the course of trading. These + have flaws of one kind or another, from minor
irritations such as brief clicks to transition pops. Although these shows
aren't unlistenable, they are not suitable for trade. I'm keen to find
replacements for these.
Ratings
are subjective. I've simplified it as follows:
A /
8-10: Studio out-takes, broadcast, soundboards.
B /
7: Good audience with clear sound, both high and low end are present.
C /
5-6: Sound quality leaves a lot to be desired but still worth a listen.
D /
4 and under: Crap sound, poor recording etcetera. Only for the criminally
insane.
Here are some shows that I am glad I have in my
collection and I often listen to:
Jeff Buckley: They are all good quality shows
traded from a class trader. For a terrific singer with more than a competent
band, however, Jeff seldom veers far from the path well-trodden when it comes
to live performances. It's all a little too well controlled, with risks limited
to little moments. Nonetheless, this minor complaint aside, a single listen to
any of his live shows ' bootlegged or otherwise - will give you a brief glimmer
of what a damm fine singer he was.
Alex Chilton & Big Star: This man is a
genius. The albums you must truly have in your collection are Big Star's #1
Record, Radio City and Third/Sister Lovers. These have all been
re-issued recently and are all true masterpieces. The Big Star reunioun in the
1990s was, for me, a 'whip around', time for people to give money to this man.
For the bootlegs, all the standards are thrashed out during the reunion gigs
with varying degrees of soul and passion. He doesn't love the Big Star moniker.
I would love to attend one of his live solo performances, though.
Derek & the Dominos: The first Filmore concert
is superb.
Bruce: 5th Feb. 1975, 9th
Aug. 1978, 3rd
July 1988. My preference is early-Bruce, The Tunnel of Love and Tom
Joad tours. For some reason known only to those who read this sentence, the
middle period - everything post-Nebraska, bar Tunnel of Love and Tom
Joad - is an unmitigated disaster. The Rising album and tour is only
apparently a return to form, but I suspect that this release will not
stand the test of time in the history of Bruce.
The
Replacements: For good sound, "Shit,
Shower, Shave". For a good performance, "Everybody loves an
ego-maniac". The "Pleased to meet me" sessions
are great, too. What can you say? There are some
seriously bad shows in there, and there are some really good ones.
Tom Waits: The Alice demos are a must. It pays
re-playing as a supplement to the official Alice release.
Neil Young: There are other better-informed
Neil-heads out there who can guide you bette,r but for me it's a far easily
question to answer. Acoustically oriented? Try the Royal Festival Hall 2 CD
set. Electric? Dream machine is good
