School Toilet

"Hey, Sam! This idea of yours is just fantastic! The girls are going to be scared out of this wits this time!" Chris told her 'partner-in-crime', a tall skinny fifteen-years-old tomboy who grinned back.

Of the same age, Chris and Sam had been friends for the last three years. Both were tomboys who loved to play pranks on others, earning the reputation of "The Impossible Duo" in school. Teachers and classmates alike had already given up on the two.

"It's a good thing we managed to get away early, helping Mr. Tan carry his equipment back. The treasure hunt should be over soon, and when the girls came in for their shower, we'll make noises to scare them, okay?" Sam was often the leader.

"Right!" Chris agreed easily. She would agree to almost anything Sam said.

"Alright, we'll take this cubicle.”

Both of them entered the cubicle, locked it and waited patiently for the opportunity to present itself.

“Its such a hot day! I was dying of heat out there!” A girl soon came in with her friend, complaining of the afternoon heat.

“I think I’ve got sunburned. My face feels a little sore.” The other girl replied.

“I can’t wait for a nice cool shower.”

Sam and Chris peeped through a crack from their cubicle, and waited until the girls entered into the showers. When they heard the sound of taps running, they got out of their cramped cubicle, and ran to different hiding place. Chris ran up to one of the girl’s cubicle and banged loudly at the metallic door. Quickly, she ran off to hide.

“Did you knock on my door?” The girl asked her friend.

“No. I’m washing my hair.”

Silence followed. Sam, at this point, started to make eerie sounds from her hiding place that reverberated throughout the toilet. The high ceiling of the toilet had a way of echoing sound such that Sam’s moaning and groaning were amplified into a dozen voices.

“Ghost!” One girl screamed. In no time, her friend was also shrieking away, terror in her voice.

The girls, thinking that there was a ghost in the toilet, quickly put on their clothes and ran out of the toilet, the subs still in their hair.

The moment the girls left the toilet, Sam and Chris burst into wicked laughter. They came out of their hiding place and none could stop laughing. It took them a while to realise that the tap was still running.

“See? We scared them so good that one of the girls did not even bother to turn off their taps.” Chris went into the cubicle to turn the tap off.

The tap was jammed. It would not turn.

“Sam, I can’t turn this thing off.” Chris was straining with all her strength. No matter how hard she tried, the tap would not budge.

“Chris, you are such a sissy. Goodness! You can’t even close a tap!”

Sam went in, and shoved Chris directly under the shower. She ignored her friend’s objections and tried to close the tap herself, but without any success too.

“It’s stuck!”

The two looked at each other, and burst into more laughter. Sam gave a shrug, telling Chris that she, too, could not close the tap.

“And who called who sissy, sissy?” Chris taunted her friend mockingly. Sam kept quiet, as he pointed at Chris. Both laughter even louder.

Both of them were outside the cubicle when a squeking sound came from the tap behind. They turned around. The tap was closing on its own. They were taken aback, and could only gape.

“It is not nice to scare others, you know.” The distinctively female voice rang out in the toilet.

“Who said that?” Sam was the first to recover from the shock. No one answered. She looked around the toilet but there was no one around, except for them.

“Maybe it’s the girls trying to scare us.” Sam told Chris. “Be careful, they have got tricks up their sleeves.”

The two opened every single cubicle in the toilet, checking it for the speaker. They were the only ones in the toilet.

“You want to play with me is it?” The voice rang out again.

“Let’s go, Sam! Let’s not get into trouble.”

Chris was quite frightened by now.  She tugged at Sam, trying to pull her away.

“Show me your face! I’ll bash you!” Sam openly challenged, quite annoyed that she could not see the speaker.

From behind, they heard a blood-curdling scream that chilled their bones. Sam spun around as blinding pain exploded across her cheek, the sting bringing tears to her eyes. Someone had slapped her but she saw no one.

This time, Sam was really frightened. Crying with fright, both she and Chris ran out of the toilet quickly.

There was a mark on Sam’s face, much like a hand’s imprint, that stayed for a week. This was a lesson that Sam and Chris never forgot. That was the last time both Sam and Chris played a prank on anyone else.
