Voodoo

Sitting in the veranda telling stories, Cik Salimah started to scream. Like a madwoman, she shrieked at everyone around her, scolding them in all kinds of foul language. Suddenly, she grabbed someone and started to beat her.

The rest of them were scared. Some tried to restrain her while others tried to calm her down. Cik Salimah had gone berserk.

After a while, the screams stopped and Cik Salimah fell to the floor in a dead swoon. She was unconscious, but breathing still. Her friends tried to revive her, but it was a futile effort. Someone had ran off to call her husband. When he came, they had already moved her into the room.

“What happened?” Encik Ramlee asked, seeing everyone tense in the room.

“Cik Salimah is possessed. We have also sent for the bomoh.”

Hearing the mention of the bomoh, Cik Salimah who was unconscious all along, got up and started screaming again. This time, she got violent, and started to throw things around the house.

Encik Ramlee was shocked, for he knew his wife to be a gentle lady. He did not know what to do. It took him all his strength to restain her.

Soon after, the bomoh arrived. The minute he saw her, he was able to tell as to what was wrong. Cik Salimah screamed even more when he approached her. She started to throw things around and cried in pain.

At a glance, the bomoh knew that someone was practicing voodoo on her. The bomoh immediately took out a book and started to recite the Koran to her. After a while, Cik Salimah calmed down, and dozed off.

“She has got no enemies. Who would want to do harm to her?” The husband asked, astonished when the bomoh told him the cause of her madness.

“It is not her friends.”

“Then who?” The husband was more perturbed.

“It is one of your business rivals.”

The husband was stunned. “Are you sure?” He asked the bomoh again.

The bomoh gave him a look that meant he knew his stuff.

“Can you do something to help her?” He asked pitifully. “She is innocent.”

The bomoh instructed him to get a few things and he did as told immediately. The bomoh went on his task.

Cik Salimah started to scream again. This time, it appeared that the screaming was more terrifying. At times, the husband thought that he had heard two different screams coming from Cik Salimah.

After a while, the bomoh came out of the room.

“Everything will be fine. I have sent this voodoo thing back to the owner. The person who did it to you would apologise to you tomorrow.”

The next morning, just as the bomoh had said, the jealous business rival came to the house and apologised to him and his wife. That was the last time that such a thing happened to Cik Salimah and it was an experience that her husband would never forget.
