"How C. S. Lewis's idea of the Law of Human Nature applies to me here and now" | ||||||
The whole time I was reading and marking the C. S. lewis artile I couldn't help but think that I was one of the people argueing the he was talking about. Or that I was the person saying, "But you promised!" Then in class I came to the realization of how correct C. S. Lewis seems to be when I recalled Mr. Scuito giving Peter Simpson a zero on his test because he had said that he didn't believe in a moral code or any sort of morality. When Peter said, "that's not fair" I realized what C. S. Lewis was talking about. The truth is I say things like that all the time, and so do most, if not all of the people around me. I had never really thought about it before but I guess there really is a Law of Nature that everyone has within them whether they want to or not. When Mr. Lewis talked about how people don't follow the Law of Nature, initially I disagreed with him. I thought that I followed the Law of Nature pretty well, but then I stopped and thought about how many times I wasn't the one saying, "You promised," buut rather I was the one trying to come up with some excuse or explanation that I could give in order to get out of my promise. For the most part I think that I am fairly fair person but there are times when I am simply "looking out for number one." When it comes to whether or not we have to be taught our Natural Law, I again agree with Mr. Lewis. I think that It is something that we are born with. If a person was born on a desert island and brought into society I think they would know some form of the basic natural law. I don't think that they would just go around hurting people for no good reason. I think that their version of decent behavior, however, would be very different from what people would call civilized. Most world religions, ever though they were started in different areas at different times, are still very similar when it comes to moral code. I think that people are afraid to do what is right. Sometimes doing what is right is not what is proffitable to them and so they don't do it, that or the culture of the time frowns upon the right sort of behavior. So, if no one taught us how to act, I dont think that it could be a coincedance that we all have the same moral laws. Therefore, there must be some sort of creator who has instilled in all of humanity what is right and what is wrong. How else would all the world all get along? What are the chances that everything would work out this way without some sort of divine intervention |
