PROCEDURES

  1. Students will create a FLAT ME figure of themselves.
  2. Students will conduct Internet searches and utilize encyclopedias, atlases, and computer research software to determine information (climate, weather, population, school and class statistics, location, etc.) about their own location.
  3. Students will compile the data about themselves and their environment into a FLAT ME letter. They request similar information from their data source(s).
  4. Sudents will collect data and artifacts from around the world by Email (primary method), mail, fax, phone, or by traveling to share information face-to-face.
  5. The collected data will be entered into a class spreadsheet and will become the data source for numerous math lessons throughout the year.
  6. Students will bring artifacts/souvenirs they received to class and share with classmates.
  7. The artifacts/souvenirs will be photographed with a digital camera to be included in the class data book.
  8. Students will transform their FLAT ME figures into magazine covers and posters advertising the places that they have "visited."
  9. Students will create  original word problems using their FLAT ME data and information.
  10. Students will create a variety of data graphs using selected data sets from the collected data.
  11. Students will share career information they received.
  12. The magazine covers, posters, data samples, lesson activities, and artifact photos will be organized and bound into a ring binder entitled FLAT ME: Our Travels Around the World.
  13. A smaller collection of the project materials will be bound into a hardcover display book using bookbinding materials.
