No Worries 7

The next morning Fox dropped them off in front of the Hoover building and went around to park in the garage. Jenny had been warned by her father several times to be on her best behavior. The Hoover Building was an odd-shaped, multi-story building on that housed the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Walter and Fox's offices. Jenny was so excited she could hardly remain calm. She wanted to run and shout but kept pace with her father as the entered the front doors.

Walter guided his daughter thought the main lobby over the pale wooden floor. Jenny paused a moment on the large FBI seal. Her small foot encased in the black pump traced the edge of the lettering. Then she was moving again. A handsome agent started to wave her thought after seeing Walter's gold backed ID but Walter softly said. "The whole treatment for her Agent Johnson." Jenny blushed as the agent looked in her purse. Jenny almost giggle as she was given the okay to sign the visitors log. Jennifer T. Skinner was written with a small flourish. She had never before been allowed to come and see her father at work. The she walked through the metal detector. It beeped and she jumped. Agent Johnson passed a black wand over her body to locate the source of the beep. It was her necklace. Once that was taken care of she walked with her hand in Walter's to the elevator.

Jenny leaned to her father as the rode up in the elevator. "Papa, this is SO cool." She grin and almost squeaked. Walter chucked and patted her hand. It was nice to see his little one happy after everything that had happened.

Walter showed Jenny into his office, after he had introduced her to Kim. Jenny gasped at the look of her fathers office. The dark woods, the numerous doors and windows, the feeling of her father’s sense of order in this room gave her reason to simply be in awe of it and of him. Walter stood back a moment and let Jenny take in the room. He worked here everyday so this was no big thing to him. But to a 14 year old, this was something special.

Jenny gently touched the leather furniture and mahogany table. Her fingers almost reverent as she moved to the desk. Careful not to really mess with anything, she looked over the desk and chair. A questioning look at her father, the answering nod and in the next moment Jenny sat in Walter's chair. "Oh now this is the life." She grinned.

Walter laughed. "Don't forget all the work that goes with it. There is more to this job than just sitting in a comfortable chair."

"I know Papa, but the perks are really nice." Jenny grinned and got out of the chair. "Does your wife have a nice office like this one?"

"Jenny," Walter warned. "You know that Fox and I love each other and are not ashamed of being together. But work is work and personal life stays out of it. Please don't refer to Fox that way when your here."

"Sorry." Jenny blushed at the admonishment. "Its just weird, I never know what to call him. I mean, he IS my stepmother."

Walter laughed at that one. "Just so long as its respectful, I don't think Fox will care what you call him baby." Walter kissed his daughters forehead and hugged her tightly.

For the next couple of hours Jenny wandered around the room while Walter took care of business. Twice she was asked to wait in the outer office with Kim while Walter spoke with Agents

Kim let Jenny file some papers for her and make a few copies. Nothing that was secret but the teenager was thrilled just the same.

Jenny brought her father a cup of coffee, and a file a while later. Her eyes danced as she performed this simple but to her important task. "New assistant, Skinner?" a voice said from the door. Kim was in the background with an apologetic look. Then she went back to her desk.

Walter chuckled, "Not a replacement by any means. Just a helper." Walter smiled fondly at Jenny as he stood up. "Director, this is my daughter Jenny. Jenny the Director of the FBI."

Jenny smiled warmly and took the hand offered to her. "I am honored to meet you Sir."

"The pleasure is all mine Miss Skinner." The Director gripped her hand warmly. "I wanted to offer my condolences on the loss of your mother. She was a lovely woman."

"Thank you Sir. She is very missed." Jenny said softly, her eyes glistening.

The director released her hand. "I understand you are living with your father now."

"Yes Sir. Papa insisted."

"And rightly so, a child needs a parents guidance." The warm smile reached the Director’s eyes. "Though you are more young woman than child." That brought a blush to Jenny's face. "Have you thought about a career in the FBI, Miss Skinner?"

Jenny laughed softly, "Oh no Sir, I plan to be a concert pianist or a singer. Not much use for those in the Bureau."

This time it was The Director’s turn to laugh. "Too true, but you have time, you may change your mind when you find out more about careers. Most young people want to be in show business until reality kicks in."

"Jenny, high C please." Walter said with a grin.

Jenny didn't question her father, she simple opened her mouth and hit the clear pure high note. Walter's grin widened as the Director’s mouth fell open. Jenny held the note until a glass on the side board shattered. "Opps sorry Papa."

"My apologies Miss Skinner, you will make a wonderful Diva, I only hope I am fortunate enough to hear you sing." The Director took Jenny's hand warmly again. The look of astonishment still on his face. Then he handed Walter a small envelope. "I am hosting a small dinner party next week, I hope you and Agent Mulder can make it, and if possible, I would love to have this delightful young lady join us, perhaps she can sing after supper. My nephew Simon will be there, he is just a couple of years older than you so it wouldn't just be you and the old folks."

"Thank you Sir, I will check with Agent Mulder and get back to you." Walter said as Jenny blushed about the older boy being there.

"Can we go Papa?" Jenny asked when the Director had left.

"Let me talk to Fox first baby." Walter said. "Speaking of which, he should be here soon to take you on a tour of the building."

As if on cue, Fox walked in at that moment. "Talking about me?" he asked with a grin.

"Always." Walter said turning a fond smile on his mate. "We have been invited to a dinner party at by the Director, Jenny too." Walter showed Fox the invitation.

"I don't think we have anything planned that night." Fox said. "He wants Jenny too? Charmed him already eh brat?"

Jenny laughed, "No, just hit high C and broke a glass, he wants me to sing, cheep entertainment. And to meet his nephew."

"Ahhh young love." Fox teased, and spent the next couple minutes fending off the outraged teen.

Walter chuckled. "All right you two, get out of here. Jenny, I expect you to be on your best behavior young lady, listen to Agent Mulder and do exactly what he tells you."

"SIR, YES SIR!" Jenny snapped to mock attention and saluted smartly.

Walter rolled his eyes. "Mulder, I will meet you both back here at 12:30 and we can all go to lunch then."

"SIR, YES SIR!" Fox mimicked Jenny and saluted.

Walter gave one of those ‘give me strength’ gestures to the ceiling and shooed the pair out of his office with the final word. "BEHAVE!"

"Yes Papa." Jenny and Fox said sweetly in unison and scurried out laughing.

"So what do you want to see first?" Fox asked when they hit the hallway.

"Your office, then everything else. Is your office as nice as Papa’s?" Jenny asked as Fox hit the elevator button.

"Nah, I am just a lowly Agent, while your dad is an Assistant Director. I just have an office in the basement with Scully."

"Ohh I remember her from Mothe.. from the funeral. The redheaded lady, right?"

"Yes, that’s Scully, she and I work together on special projects." Fox said as the elevator doors opened and deposited them in the basement.

Fox opened the door to his office, and let Jenny in first. She stopped in the doorway, "WOW, and I thought MY room was a mess."

That comment brought peals of laughter from the offices occupant, Dana Scully. "You should have seen it BEFORE he cleaned it up."

"Oh Ha Ha." Fox snorted as he pushed in. "Dana, you remember Walter's daughter Jenny."

Scully stood up with a warm smile, and extended a hand. "Nice to see you again Jenny."

"Nice to see you again Ms, Scully." Jenny said politely taking the hand in hers for a moment.

"Are you all settled in the new room?" Scully asked.

"Yes Ma’am, Papa and Fo..amm Age..amm . brought my piano over last night too. Makes it seem more like home now." Jenny was a bit flustered as to how to refer to Fox and still be discreet.

Fox placed one hand on Jenny's shoulder, "Its okay kid, just relax, Dana knows about Walter and I. And even if she didn't, there is no reason for you to feel uncomfortable talking about us. You can say Papa and Fox."

Jenny flashed him a smile in thanks.

"So what are your plans?" Scully asked breaking the awkward silence that followed.

"Fox is going to take me on a tour of the building today." Jenny said, "Then lunch with Papa, and then I get to stay with papa for a while this after noon while he does some work. I even get to help him." Jenny beamed.

Scully smiled, and laughed inside, she could see how proud and enamored Jenny was with the whole idea. It was nice to see someone with so much enthusiasm. "Have fun you two."

Fox squired Jenny about the building for a couple hours. He showed her everything that there was to see, fingerprint and handwriting analysis, the evidence room, cafeteria and computer room, surveillance, and the firearms unit. Jenny was in awe of the whole place. She was polite and respectful to the Agents she was introduced to, and never touched anything with out being asked to do so. Fox was very impressed by her behavior.

Jenny was animated and talkative when they joined Walter and headed to lunch. She told her father everything that they had done, and had to be hushed finally to eat her meal.

After lunch Jenny went with Fox on an errand. She was thrilled to be going on ‘official FBI business’ even if it was just a simple pick up.

A simple pick up, that is all it was to be, go to the bank and pick up a file that had been left there. Nothing special, nothing X-fileish about it, nothing that would need a swat team, the fire department or a hostage negotiator. But nothing was ever easy with Fox Mulder around.
