The Mating Rituals of the Young Taiwanese Yuppy
< ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Not that I have anything against yuppies (or Taiwanese for that matter), but it seems every time I’m in a pub or club in Taipei, some rich, proud, shiny-shirt-boy has to pull out his manhood, proudly display it to everyone who cares to see, and slap it down on the table.  I’m talking about cellular telephones of course.  I’m sure Freud would conclude that this display is to overcome and suppress feelings of inadequacy towards the exhibitionist’s other object of masculinity, but I believe more lies beneath the surface of this spectacle.
Technological evolution (and stupid male pride) have created a long line of symbols that allow women (who apparently can’t make the decision without clear indicators pointing the way) to determine the dominant male.  Whether or not these symbols are actually respected by females the way males believe they are, is of no consequence.  We will continue to put our worthiest property to the test, be it the fastest horse, the sleekest sports car or the smallest (but does size really matter?) mobile phone.
The cell-phone is clearly no longer strictly about communication; it is neither a status symbol nor a middle-class necessity.  It is (in Taipei at least) a form by which to announce availability and attractiveness, much like the Porsche was for men in the 80’s.  A mobile phone owner often invests his time and money into the phones and is constantly aware of its presence, nestled snuggly against the thigh in the pant pocket or on exhibition on the table in front of its master.  Incessant playing, coddling and petting to bring attraction to the gadget only serves to prove the owner’s lack of confidence in the phone and insecurity with himself  (and a rather odd masturbation fetish).
Does it need to be this way?  Can’t we just arm wrestle and beat each other up?  In this day of television and the Internet, violence has been downplayed to something you hear about in the news.  People have forgotten that it is still an important part of our society that is being trodden on.  Where has the romance gone?  Gone are the days when you could fight for a girl and win her respect.  As are the days when you could fight a girl and make her respect you.  From this reporter’s point of view, we have gone too far to return to the set of values and tradition that were once respected as the defining traits of our culture.  Mobile phones are the last step in the complete failure and collapse of society.  You may own the new Motorola V8162, but the mobile owns your soul.
