Sparks fly on Scorpion Set
Report by Hazel Tan

You hardly find brooding Li Nanxing in such a chirpy mood.

Perhaps, it has to do with the topic of the day.

He spoke of her as if speaking about someone he has known for ages.

And the woman in question isn't even his wife, TCS actress Yang Libing.

Nor long-time screen flame Zoe Tay.
It's fresh-faced Chan Chung Ling, 28, who is acting opposite him for the first time in the blockbuster, Coup de Scorpion. It will air on Channel 8 at 9 pm tonight. Local television's latest screen couple (picture above) were quick to declare to Singapore reporters how well they clicked.

Funny guy. Good sense of humour. Very charming.

Yes, Chung Ling couldn't praise co-star Nanxing enough.

"You could see sparks flying all over the set," added the doe-eyed Hongkong actress, giggling like a schoolgirl in a telephone interview from Hongkong.

And Nanxing, 33, was equally effusive in returning the compliment.

"We share quite an amazing bit of chemistry," he said.

"Filming went very smoothly. We got what we wanted most of the time.

"What's worrying for an artiste is when he finds he has no chemistry with his co-star."

In the case of Chung Chung, as the Hongkong actress is affectionately known to her fans, the chemistry can probably be described as sizzling.

Communication sparked their fiery screen presence, it seems.

Said Nanxing: "If there was a scene we had to do that day, she would take the initiative, come to me and discuss how we should act it out. We communicated a lot."

And whoever said you can't mix work with pleasure?

Said the King of Caldecott Hill: "At times, we just treated acting as play. We joked as we worked. That takes away the pressure and we don't feel so stifled.

"So, we enjoyed a harmonious relationship."

Hence the chemistry ignited on screen, he said, with the usual watch-us-and-see approach that actors have when promoting a film.

And, of course, he had nothing but compliments for his co-star.

"The foreign artistes are very professional. They always put their jobs first," he said.

RED-HOT ACTION

IT was chilling.

But the action was red-hot.

We are talking about Nanxing's underwater kissing scene with Chung Ling - the scene which the actor singled out as his most memorable scene in Coup de Scorpion.

"Because it was filmed at midnight. It was so cold I almost died," he recalled.

To make matters worse, that scene took about five hours to complete because they had to do an underwater take, followed by another scene by the poolside.

"We had to blow dry our hair and change into dry clothes. We spent most of the time waiting," Nanxing said.

That was his first underwater kissing scene in his more than 10 years of acting.

But it certainly was not his first on-screen kiss.

Who can forget his most recent kissing scene with Wong Li-lin. They locked lips for almost two minutes - from the kitchen to the living room and into the bedroom - in the telemovie, The Test of Time, in 1997.

Red hot then, real cool now.
