The Morality of Jesus Journal

One paragraph summary of the key idea summarizing the major idea of the section:The Morality of Jesus

The key idea of this section is that Jesus, mainly through his stories, teachings, and parables, taught wise, sensible, and valuable morals that are still followed today. In relation to Jesus' morality, I think the key idea is to treat others as you would like to be treated, which is known as the Golden Rule. Through parables such as the judgement of nations, Good Samaritan, and Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught humanity that the lowly and righteous are blessed, he was present to fulfill the prophets, follow the commandments, love everyone, and be genuine in religion, for God can see through false practice. Furthermore, Jesus taught the corect objective morality that all people should follow. Morality is objective, and we naturally know what is good, and Jesus taught us what we should do to be good and moral people.

List and explain three of the most important ideas you want to remember from this week.

The Law of Human Nature-The law of human nature, discussed in C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity, states that humans are naturally inclined to do good. Humans, whether they chose to do right or wrong, have a sense of knowing what is right and wrong. The possilbe reason for this law of human nature points to the existance of God because there seems to be objective morality in the world in all humans.

The Golden Rule-The Golden Rule was the basis of Jesus' teachings, for it declares that all people should treat others like they would like to be treated. Although, humans contradict themselves in the law of human nature, by knowing what is right and still doing wrongs to others, people still ought to aim to follow the Golden Rule and think whether they would approve of their own reflected actions. The Golden Rule is central to Jesus teachings because it clearly establishes that humans need to love one other, whihc in turn makes them more moral and closer to God.

The Sermon on the MountJesus' Sermon on the Mount expanded on the teaching of the Golden Rule, and in this Sermon, Jesus stated the Beatitudes, the role of himself and his disciples, the true meaning of the commandments, and how to be truly holy. Jesus stated that the poor, suffering, and lowly were blessed by God, that he and his disciples were to improve life and fulfill the prophets, and to be a light for the world. Jesus explained the commandments in broader detail, clearly establishing to avoid whatever leads you to a violation and sin, and to love all. Jesus taught that people should try to preach and praise God in true and absolute ways, and not just for show, because God knows what is real. Finally, Jesus explained that people should not be materialistic, judgemental, and should follow his words.

What is a Christian? Am I a Christian? What did my pre-sermon survey reveal? Did I show I knew what Jesus taught, believed, and tried to follow His teachings? If so, explain how being a Christian really affects your morality. If not, explain the base of your moral system.

A Christian is a person who first and foremost believes in Jesus and in God. Belief is essential to one's Faith. In accordance with that fundamental belief, a Christian is someone who knows and follows Jesus teachings about morality. Christianity is based on Jesus teachings on how to live and treat others and God, and Christians must live and treat others and God in the way Jesus taught. I consider myself to be a Christian. I firmly believe in God and Jesus, try to follow Jesus' teachings, follow the Golden Rule, and be moral and virtuous. However, I know that I need to know more of Jesus' teachings to be a better Christian. I am a moral person, but I don't know some of Jesus parables or teachings well. I need to make an effort to know Jesus teachings more fully, and I need to make Jesus a bigger influence in my life than he already is. I do follow the morality of Christianity, and in doing so, I live a happier and better life. I try to follow the Golden Rule daily, and I consider how my actions and words affeect others. Christianity determines how I live my life, and I try to live my life in accordance to Jesus teachings.

What can I do to try to make myself a better Christian?

I need to first and foremost make an effort to know more of Jesus' teachings. I feel that my knowledge of Jesus teachings needs to be improved, even though I do follow what he teaches. Once I know and understand more of Jesus teachings, and not in a general sense, I need to strive to remember and follow Jesus' teachings everyday in my life. Doing so will make more more righteous and more moral, and a better Christian. Finally, I need to employ the Golden Rule in every aspect of my life, in the way I tlak, act, and think. I believe that the Golden Rule was Jesus' among Jesus' best teachings, and therefore it needs to be part of my everyday life.
