Some Good Moral Systems Journal

One paragraph summary of the key idea summarizing the major idea of the section

The main idea of this section about some good moral systems is that despite the differences between religions, namely Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Confucianism, the religions all preach moral goodness in many similar ways. I focused on Islam, which was founded by the prophet Muhammad in 610 AD follwing a vision of the archangel Gabriel. Through the vision, Muhammad received the Qu'ran and founded Islam, which is a "surrender" to Allah. The Five Pillars of Islam help Muslims to live their lives. Judaism, Buddhism, and Confucianism were also studied. Judaism was founded by Abraham, known as the first Hebrew. Abraham followed God's calling with a covenant to bring His people to Canaan, and God granted him many descendants, who spread Judaism through the world. Judaism uses the Ten Statements, similar to the Ten Commandments, and the Torah as a moral codes for Jews to live by. Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Guatama in about 537 BC. He gave up a life a luxury to live as a monk, and preached that life was full of suffering and that materialism was often the cause of it.His religion spread as he became known as the Buddha, who preached an end to suffering in Nirvana. The Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path help to guide Buddhists in their lives, as well as the notions of Darma, Karma, and Enlightenment. Confucianism was founded by Confucius originally to show how the dynasty of China could work properly. He wanted people to follow the dao/tao to make the world better. Confucius preached that people need to be good and moral within themselves and possess great virtue, and essentially abide by the golden rule. All these great moral systems

List and explain three of the most important ideas you want to remember from this week.

Karma- Karma is the Buddhist law that states that every action has a consequeunce that will return to the person in their lifetime. Karma can be basically summarized as "every action has a reaction". This Buddhist law teaches Busshists to watch their actions by warning them that negative actions will come back to haunt them, whereas good actions will be rewarded. Even though I may not believe Karma in the Buddhist sense exactly, I do believe that if I use the notion of Karma in my life, it will help me to be a better person and be in Heaven.

Chun-tzu-Chun-tzu is the idea of the perfect gentleman in Confucianism, which is a moral leader which others strive to be, and who must display morality and virture to the greatest extent. I see my self as a leader, but keeping this notion in my mind is a step I can take to be a better leader who helps otehrs to be more moral and virtuous.

The Ten Statements-The Ten Statements are essentially just like the Christian Ten Commandments. For Jews, they state that there is a God, there is only one God, you shouldn't swear falsely by the Lord, rememebr the Sabbath, honor father and mother, not murder, not have sex with anotehr man's wife, not kidnap, not bear false witness, and not covet a neighbor's house. I want to rememebr these because they teach me to leave relgiously and morally, and help me to remember to abide by the Ten Commandments, which is the primary moral guidline for Catholics like me. Doing so will make me a better perosn and a better Catholic.

One good question you should keep with you to ponder.

What relgion displays the best moral system for people to live by, or is this just a matter of opinion?

What should you try to do to make you a better person, a more moral person, from this study of other moral systems?.

I need to remember the key moral componenets of these moral system to become a more moral person. Most importantly, I need to remember the "Golden Rule" because it applies to these moral systems and will help me to improve the lives of others and myself simultaneously. I need to remember that my actions determine my moral character and the well-being of others, so I need to display good morality and virtuosity to be a moral and better person. Furthermore, as a Catholic, I need to remember that the moral systems studied are more demanding and stricter than Catholicism. Therefore, in doing so I will avoid being a lazy or dishonest Catholic and I can follow Jesus and Catholicism as it is intended.
