District Park Cave

This cave is in south Austin at Dick Nichols park, supposedly. I haven't been there yet so I don't know too much about it.

5/12/02 - I learned from Jim that Hanna knew about District Park. It was at Dick Nichols Park in South Austin. I went over there to check it out. While I was walking up to the rock wall surrounding the cave, I noticed a couple kids doing something strange.........Anyways, one of them said that the cave looks like it goes for a distance. I heard there is a gate inside, though. We may go check it out next weekend...

5/18/02 - Well we checked out District Park today. I met Jim and Kara at the 360 Greenbelt Access, then we headed over to Dick Nichols Park. Since it's only a few minutes away from Whilrpool Cave, I made it seem like I was going there. Jim thought I was going to the wrong cave.

So we got there and Jim suggested I only needed to bring a flashlight because he thought we wouldn't get anywhere. So we headed off down the trail. Jim noticed the rock wall to the left so we headed over. After seeing both entrances, Jim went in the big entrance first. I came after, then Kara. The entrance is a small crawling tunnel that you can basically slide down, which Kara did.

It opens up into a small room which turns right. There are a lot of formations which have been broken off. After turning right, it turns left again and slopes downward going into a tight belly crawl. But this is where it ends because there is a gate there. You need to contact the TCMA to get in. So we head back out.

I look down into the other cave, then crawl in. It is a tight belly crawl which becomes very jagged. It begins opening up a little, although it is still belly crawling the whole way. There are formations all over too. So, it goes straight for about 20 feet, then makes a U-turn to the left, then kinda branches out into this opening. It doesn't lead anywhere though, so we turn back. Jim finds a way to this little room, but doesn't go any further. So we head out. It was rather warm in this cave, as well.

So that was District Park Cave. I'm not sure how far it goes past that gate, or if you can go farther in the smaller cave, but we are gonna find out soon enough.

5/19/02 - Went back to District Park today with Sean and took some pics. Sean was afraid bugs were gonna bite him so he didn't go in. I am gonna drop off the film today at HEB and hopefully get them back around Wednesday or so.

6/8/02 - Jim and I went back to District Park to see if the little cave went anywhere, but it didn't. It was pouring when we got there, so we had to wait awhile in our cars. Then we headed over to the cave. It was dry as a bone inside though. So we got out and made our way back.
