Airman's Cave Trip #2 (3-31-02)

So after doing Airman's that Sunday, I knew I would be back. And I had to bring some more people. An and Mike seemed like logical choices. They had been in before and I'm sure they would go again. I also tried getting more people but everyone either chickened out, couldn't go or didn't want to go. So it ended up being Jim, An, Mike and I for Easter Sunday at 1pm.

Mike and I drove down to the Greenbelt access parking lot and waited for An. James was supposed to come meet us but he was off doing some free labor. Finally An showed up and he got ready. Then we headed off. When we got there Jim was waiting for us. After talking for awhile, we were ready. We went in.

Mike went in first. He forgot how small the keyhole was and he kept laughing while he was going through. A strange defense mechanism. Then I went, then Jim, then An. We all made it in. We went through the crawls with no problem. When we got to One-Legged Man, I watched An go through it. It looked way too tight for me so I said no way. He said "Come on Chris!" but I said "No way!" Jim and I took the other way. Mike went through though. Then we went past the part Jim and I stopped at. We had to crawl through a rocky crawlway to get to a little room. Then we went through a tunnel that went straight up then turned 90 degrees again. Right after this room we came to a small passageway that lead to the Aggie Art Gallery.

The gallery was pretty cool. Lots of stuff. An had made a bowl of cereal the last time he came in. Jim made a little creature's face. Mike made a snake and a shamrock and I made a toilet. William's Maze began in this room but we didn't go through it. We left the gallery.

Out the gallery and to the left we came to the Walking Pasage. It was about 15 feet high in some parts and it was pretty cool. Cool rock formations on the wall as well. There were about three rooms where we could walk before we were back to crawling, etc.

Eventually we came to a point where we weren't sure if we were supposed to go through it. There was a big rock overhanging a little place where you could slide through, and it was really small. Jim decided to scout it out. He went through and ended up in a little room on the other side. Then he saw a crawlway that seemed like it went on forever. He thought it was Karen Crawl, but I was looking at the map and it didn't seem like we were there yet. So he said come on down we went. This crawlway was tough and I ended up naming it the Killer Crawl. It was real long and rocks were all over the bottom. It was hard. Towards the end I think Jim was tossing pebbles through at us out of this little hole but I never found out if he was doing that.

So we finally came out of the Killer Crawl. We climbed up at one point which was pretty cool and came into another room. We kept going and ended up having to go down which ended up into a semi-walking passageway going left and right. We explored around a bit and then consulted the map which told us to go left. This passageway was pretty cool. It had rock formations coming down off the ceiling. And the passageway went on for awhile to. Eventually it started to get pretty tight. Mike named this place Yoda's House. Then we finally came to Karen Crawl. It had to be. We had to start crawling on our hands and knees and the map looked like where we were. So we decided to stop there. We took a break, drank some water and had some apricots. It had been about 3 hours or so. So, we headed back.

Going back was hard as usual, but we made it. We all got out safe and sound and we were all muddy. We all decided to head over to Chili's for some dinner. We also all needed to go clean up in the bathroom. I drank four huge glasses of water so that tell's you how much water I lost.

So that was the second trip to Airman's Cave. I went a lot further than the first time I went. We wouldn't go in for another 2 weeks......
