Recorded Paris, France,
April 22, 1971.
Quite a rare set from Don Cherry, issued in the early 70s in Japan only,
in a trio with Johnny Dyani and Okay Temiz, with whom he'd recorded the
great Orient set. The set opens with Cherry on wood flute, in one of his
contemplative modes, while the latter half is two longer pieces, each
making up two sides of an LP, "Dollar And Okay's Tune" and "East". "Dollar
And Okay's Tune" starts with Cherry on piano, playing a rolling South
African tinged groove, and then he moves back and forth between his
pocket trumpet and piano. "East" is a Cherry piece, and though Temiz
bubbles along nicely underneath, there's a lot of space and freedom. The
playing is free and spirited throughout with Cherry's globally informed
lines weaving in and out of more textural passages.
