Book Citation



Basic Rules:

two spaces follow each period in a citation
one space follows all other punctuation
titles of books, magazines, scholarly journals, full-length plays and newspapers are underlined OR italicized
titles of articles, poems, short stories and chapters within books are put in quotation marks


Books (fiction or non-ficiton) written by one author

Last name, first name MI. Title of Book. Publishing City: Publisher, copyright date.

example:
Thomas, John B. The Famous Writer. Minneapolis: Minneapolis UP, 1989.


Books with more than one author

Follow the same format as above except that the authors are listed alphabetically by the last name unless it is indicated on the cover page that one of the authors is "more important" than the others.

example: cover page reads: "by Michael Camdon and Suzanne Alleby"
Alleby, Suzanne, and Camdon, Michael. The Best of the Victorian Era. Chicago: Penny Press, 1999.

example: if it reads:"Written by John Graham with Paul Saffer and Jill Homely"
Graham, John, Homely, Jill, and Saffer, Paul. The Great Plays of Romanticism. New York: MacMillan, 2000.
