College Now! English 101 Course Outline


Class Time:

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 7:15-8:09 a.m.



Grading Policy:

40% Research Paper (on website)
Each student will be required to write a research paper. A rough draft will be required before a student may post the paper on his/her website. The rough draft must be 10-12 pages of typed text, include at least five citations (one from each of five sources) and have a works cited list at the end and a cover page in the beginning. The topics for this term paper should be chosen wisely. The topic should be of interest to the student, be an arguable topic and be able to be researched and written about in the required amount of pages.
20% Essays (website)
Students will be required to complete a series of essays that will be required to be posted on their websites. These essays should be written on different aspects of the topic chosen for the research paper. Each essay receives two grades. One on the original essay handed in on paper and one on the final approved version that appears on the website.

Autobiography: Who Am I?
Definition Essay
Cause-And-Effect Analysis Essay
Compare/Contrast Essay
Persuasive Essay
Short Story (fictional piece)
20% Journal/Classwork:
Each student must have a spiral or hard-covered marble notebook. This notebook is divided into three sections: Class Notes, Reading Journal(for responses to assigned readings), and Vocabulary (from assigned readings). There will also be vocabulary puzzles and group presentations given for each series of readings. These will be graded as well as any quizzes given during the term.
20% Final Exam:
A final exam will be given the last two days of the course and will consist of writing essays based on the readings and discussions completed during the term.



Miscellaneous:

Students will be creating websites for this class. The website will be treated as an electronic portfolio that students may use to showcase their writing. Therefore, approval is required before students place anything on the website so that it is worth using for job applications, college applications, interviews, etc.
Journals are due on the dates specified. Any journal handed in after the due date will not be graded.
Each student will be assigned a computer to work with. If your computer is not functioning on a certain day, please notify the teacher and another computer will be assigned temporarily.
As a college course, English 101given through College Now! Follows the rules set down on the college level. Therefore….
…attendance is mandatory
…a research paper is required
…reading and journal entries will be assigned and graded
Please refrain from cursing, using derogatory language, being disrespectful, etc.
Please ask questions, comment on issues brought up during discussions, constructively participate in group presentations, etc.
