Information on the Scout badge requirements came from "The Big Bear Cub Scout Book", "Brownie Girl Scout", "Girl Scout Badges and Signs", "Merit Badge Dot Org", "Wolf Cub Scout Book", "The Big Bear Cub Scout Book", and "Webelos".

This idea originally started with just sticking "Scouts" in our home school schedule once a week to help my kids take the time to work on Scout badges at home. Then someone said they used the Scout badge requirements for a lot of the things they did in home school. As I looked into it further, I realized how much could be taught to my children, and at the same time they were completing badges. I have not been really diligent about including art, for instance, but there is an incredible amount of arts and crafts included in Scouting and it is the perfect resource for the things we can do together. Science is another area that I don't do too well in. The Scout book has lots of ideas for Language Arts, History, and Physical Education, etc. I started making a list of which requirements fell into which school category so I could pick a subject and find requirements that would cover something in that subject. I realized that others would probably be interested in my list and voilą, Scout School was born! |
I have five children who have all been in Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Camp Fire, or American Heritage Girls at one time or another. I have been a Brownie leader, Girl Scout leader, Discovery Club advisor, and American Heritage Girls leader, so I have had all those resources available to me to draw from. I am in the processs of re-doing this entire site with the help of volunteers, so please be patient with me. This takes time, people! |

These badge requirements will provide a myriad of ideas you can use in your home school curriculum. All activities can be done by both boys and girls. The outline gives a very brief description of what the requirement entails, so you will have to get the appropriate book in order to do the requirement properly. Also, some requirements are mandatory and others are optional for certain badges, so again you will need the book. The Scout books give much more detail on the background of the requirement and great ideas on how to do it. If your child wants to earn the badge and there is no Scout troop nearby, you can always register as an Independent or Lone Scout and still be entitled to the badges, camping programs, and so on, without attending meetings. However, only boys can get Boy Scout badges and only girls can get Girl Scout badges.
I have categorized each requirement separately into school subject categories, but I am by no means the final word on this. Not all requirements within one badge will fall in the same category. Some might fall into two or more. If you can't find the requirement you are looking for, read the requirement again and see if it fits a different category. I have been getting this up as fast as I can, so if you find a requirement you think is in the wrong category, let me know. I have put camping skills in Home Arts because I consider a tent to be a home, if only temporarily. If you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to write me. |
