Using Camp Fire requirements for supplementing
home-school curriculum

Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come. D&C 130:18-19

I am looking for someone to take over the Camp Fire School web site. If you are interested, please e-mail me.

Information on the Camp Fire requirements came from "Adventure Trails" and "World of Discovery".

Star Flight Kids This idea originally started with just sticking "Scouts" in our home school schedule once a week to help my kids take the time to work on Scout badges at home. Then someone said they used the Scout badge requirements for a lot of the things they did in home school. As I looked into it further, I realized how much could be taught to my children, and at the same time they were completing badges and emblems. I have not been really diligent about including art, for instance, but there is an incredible amount of arts and crafts included in Scouting and it is the perfect resource for the things we can do together. Science is another area that I don't do too well in. And the Scout books have lots of ideas for Language Arts, History, and Physical Education, etc.

I have five children, all of whom have been in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts and then my daughter and I switched to Camp Fire. I was a Camp Fire Girl all 12 years I was in school, I have been a Girl Scout leader for four years, and then I was a Discovery Club advisor, so I have all those resources available to me to draw from. I just finished putting up the Action Craft requirements and Torch Bearer requirements. This will take time, as I also have a family to homeschool. Adventure Club Girl

These bead and emblem requirements will provide a myriad of ideas you can use in your home school curriculum. All activities can be done by both boys and girls, of course. The outline gives a very brief description of what the requirement entails, so you will have to get the appropriate book in order to do the requirement properly. Also, not all the requirements need to be done for each Torch Bearer emblem, so again you will need the book to find out how many you need to do. The Camp Fire books give much more detail on the background of the requirement and great ideas on how to do it. If your child wants to earn the beads and emblems and there is no Camp Fire club nearby, you can always register as an Independent Camp Fire Boy or Girl and still be entitled to the beads, emblems, camping programs, and so on, without attending meetings. Since Camp Fire is co-ed, all these activities can be done by both boys and girls and they can earn the beads and emblems.

I have categorized each requirement separately into school subject categories, but I am by no means the final word on this. Not all requirements within one Torch Bearer, for instance, will fall in the same category. Some might fall into two or more. If you can't find the requirement you are looking for, read the requirement again and see if it fits a different category. I have been getting this up as fast as I can, so if you find a requirement you think is in the wrong category, let me know. I have put camping skills in Home Arts because I consider a tent to be a home, if only temporarily. If you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to write me. Discovery Club Girl
