What's New

30 November 2003

It is not that there was nothing to write about during the last three months – there were too many things. The primary difficulty lies with the move from Houston to London and the need to change the internet provider. Kind of difficult to do until we knew exactly where we will live – and that took about a month. This was followed by a whole series of other distractions, but as you can see, we found a new home, both physical and electronic.

As soon as we found a place to stay in London (and this is a long story which I plan to write up over the Christmas holidays) I had to go back to Houston and Kumiko came along because the annual international quilt show was about to start.

It gave us a chance to re-visit our house and all the plants we left behind. We were expecting the papayas to be ripe by now, but even though they reached supermarket size they were still green. The realtor told us he found one yellow and ate it and that it was the best papaya he ever had. I just heard that few weeks ago a mini tornado swept through Houston and all the papaya trees ended uprooted. We did have a fairly good crop of figs and they are probably fine. We took advantage of the trip to give the trees around the house a little “hair cut”. We had the lower branches trimmed away to make the house little bit more visible. Unfortunately the real estate market really slowed down and the house is still waiting – unsold. We do not expect much to happen over the next few months. The joys of real estate ownership!

Life in London is very different from Houston – but that again is a subject requiring more time and I plan to go into detail in next month’s update. In the mean time we took advantage of one of the incredible travel deals that are so plentiful here. A week in Mallorca for $250, this included the airfare and hotel. The trick of course is that Mallorca is a summer destination, but weather was wonderful, around 20 degrees C and sunny most of the time. There were very few tourists, which to some extent created a different atmosphere, but it was easy to get everywhere. We rented a little car and drove around the island, spent a few days in Palma, the capital and in general, had a very relaxing one week. Beautiful place, but unfortunately we quickly had to eliminate it from the list of potential places to retire to. Prices were similar to those in London and those are astronomical –but that, once again, is another story.

Tomorrow we are heading on another short trip, this time to Prague. Unfortunately, not as well priced as Spain, but still more accessible from here than from Houston. More details on our trip and our life in London should show up on the website before the end of the year.
