What's New

29 March 2002

As it turned out March was a month dedicated to traveling. It all started when my sister called. They were on the way to Florida and decided to swing by Houston. In fact the timing could not have been better. (Click on the images to see a larger version). Houston is typically not a town for sightseeing, but one of the few exceptions occurs in early March when the azaleas are in bloom. It is an opportunity to visit some spectacular gardens and houses (private and museums) along the Buffalo Bayou. Unfortunately this has been a bizarre year. We had several frosts, the last of which hit in the beginning of March. The sad result was that most of the azalea flower buds were nipped by the frost and were not as spectacular as they can be. But the weather turned out to be excellent and it was nice to see everybody again, since we do not travel north very often (almost never).

Next came the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) convention. I have missed the last few and this time I was not presenting a poster, giving a talk or even showing foreign visitors around. It was nice to relax and go to see presentations I was interested in and from time to time run into people I have not seen in ages. However, the crowning event for me was the field trip I went to after the convention. One week on the barrier reef in Belize. These pictures are taken with one of the disposable underwater cameras. The cost is extremely reasonable (about 7 dollars) and they take surprisingly good pictures.

Day after I came back from Belize, Kumiko headed to Dallas for the Quilt Show. She was showing several pieces. A miniature which was awarded the white ribbon and a quilted dress inspired by a Japanese kimono. Both were her own designs. I do not have a good photo of the dress, will have to post it when we re-take it. Finally, a Dallas anniversary quilt, which was a collaborative effort and for which Kumiko made the Pegasus in the lower right corner, was also on exhibition.

We all need a rest.
