Family of ELIJAH PHIPPS of Chatham, New Hampshire.

Compiled by David A. Crouse, 1999.

4. ELIJAH PHIPPS  (3. Samuel;  2. Joseph;  1. Solomon);
     son of Samuel and Abigail Phipps of Charlestown, Massachusetts;
     born 7 June 1727, in Charlestown;
     died 2 January 1805, in Chatham, New Hampshire; buried at Chatham
Center Cemetery;
     married, 26 March 1750, in Charlestown, SARAH FLETCHER, who died of
small pox, on 22 October 1752, in Charlestown.

Elijah was a veteran of the American Revolution and came to Chatham with
his son, Samuel, about 1783.  Elijah and Sarah apparently had only one
child, as follows:

5. SAMUEL PHIPPS, son of Elijah & Sarah, born 1751; died 30 January 1830,
in Chatham; buried at Chatham Center Cemetery; married, 26 September
1776, in Cambridge, Mass., MARY MAXFIELD; who died 3 November 1825, in
Chatham (no stone for her at Chatham Center Cemetery).  Samuel was a
veteran of the American Revolution, and apparently lived first in
Cambridge and Burlington, MA.  According to information of his son,
Samuel, Jr. (in the History of Carroll County, NH), the family came from
Woburn, MA, to Chatham, NH, in 1783.
They may, however, have lived a short time in Fryeburg, ME, since one
child was born there in 1782.  They settled at Chatham Center, on land of
Samuel Langdon, who was at that time president of Harvard College.   Nine
children as follows:

5.1.  MARY (or POLLY) PHIPPS, dau. of Samuel & Mary, b. 28 March 1778, in
Cambridge, MA; d. 13 July 1796, the first white person to die in Chatham;
buried in Chatham on the Robinson farm on Toad Hill and later removed to
the Chatham Ctr. Cemetery (no grave marker).

5.2.  SAMUEL PHIPPS, JR., son of Samuel & Mary, b. 15 January 1780, in
Burlington, MA; m., 20 February 1811, BETSY STIMSON, dau. of Joseph &
Lavinia (Tarbox) Stimson of Limerick, ME.  Betsy was b. 19 April 1790, in
Limerick.  Taylor's "Early Families of Limerick, Maine" indicates that
this family moved to Winnebago, Minnesota; however, Samuel Phipps
(apparently widowed) was living with his son William in the 1850 and 1860
censuses of Chatham.  There are no gravestones nor records of the deaths
of Samuel and Betsy in
Chatham.  Samuel served as Town Clerk and Selectman of Chatham for
several years between 1805 and 1835.  Ten children, all born in Chatham,
as follows:
