born 15 May 1775, in Concord, NH;

died 4 December 1859, in Chatham, NH.

About 1792 or 1794, Asa Eastman and Samuel Ayer Bradley (1774-1844) built

a cabin and commenced clearing the wilderness on the Cold River on a

tract of land purchased by their fathers (John Bradley and Jonathan

Eastman) known as the Bradley and Eastman Grant, now a part of the town

of Stow, Maine. At the end of the first summer Bradley decided he

preferred a professional life and eventually entered Dartmouth College,

from which he graduated in 1799, later becoming a lawyer in Fryeburg,

Maine. Asa Eastman continued to clear his land, and taught school

winters until his marriage in 1795, when he moved into a log house which

he had built the previous summer on the Chatham side of the so-called

Province Line (State line). The family lived there until 1801, when he

built the first two story frame house in the settlement. He lived there

until his death.

Asa & Mary (Kimball) Eastman had nine children, as follows:

Cem., No. Chatham; m., 16 March 1824, PHEBE WELLS CLEMENT (b. 24 January

1803 in West Gorham, ME; d. 29 Dec. 1887, in Chatham), dau. of Jacob H.&

Phebe (Coffin) Clement. Resided in Chatham and had six children, as

follows:

(1.1) ASA EASTMAN, son of Jonathan & Phebe, b. 7 January 1825, in

Chatham; d. 25 Sept. 1855; buried with wife at Eastman Cem., No. Chatham;

m., 25 July 1854, in Lovell, ME, MARY ANN SHAW (b. 7 Sept. 1823; d.

1915), dau. of Ebenezer & Anna (Morton) Shaw of Chatham. Mary Ann m(2),

23 Aug. 1864, Sylvester Emerson of Stow, ME. Asa & Mary Ann had one

child: MARY E. EASTMAN (1855-1928), who m. Stephen E. Ward of Fryeburg,

ME.

(1.2) JACOB CLEMENT EASTMAN, son of Jonathan & Phebe, b. 13 Nov. 1827,

in Chatham; d. 5 Feb. 1896 (VR Chatham: d. 5 Feb. 1895); buried with wife

at Eastman Cem., No. Chatham; m., 17 Feb. 1856, LOUISA SHAW (b. 18 Dec.

1826; d. 22 Jan. 1900, in Brockton, MA), dau. of Ebenezer & Anna (Morton)

Shaw of Chatham. Jacob & Louisa resided in Chatham and had five

children, as follows:

(1.2.2) MARSHALL EASTMAN, son of Jacob & Louisa, b. 30 Aug. 1858; d. 3

(1.2.3) ADA LOUISA EASTMAN, dau. of Jacob & Louisa, b. 28 Apr. 1862; d.

3 July 1863 (Eastman Cem., N. Chatham).

(1.2.4) FANNIE LOUISA EASTMAN, dau. of Jacob & Louisa, b. 24 Aug. 1863;

m., 10 April 1887, in Fryeburg, ME, IVORY E. HILL of Bethlehem, PA (b.

about 1866), son of David & Carolin Hill.

(1.2.5) CHESTER CLEMENT EASTMAN, son of Jacob & Louisa, b. 3 January

1865; d. 1953; buried with wife at Pine Grove Cem., Fryeburg, ME; m., 26

Nov. 1889, in Fryeburg, SARAH M. TOWLE (1864-1941), dau. of Jason & Emma

E. (Short) Towle of Fryeburg. Chester was a farmer, Town Clerk and

Justice of the Peace in Chatham, and moved to Fryeburg in 1917, where he

was part owner of the Fryeburg Monumental Works. They had six children:

(1.3) JONATHAN EASTMAN, son of Jonathan & Phebe, b. 12 May 1830, in

Chatham; m(1), 24 Sept. 1860, RUTH LINCOLN BRAY (b. 22 Sept. 1835, in

Bridgton, ME; d. 11 Sept. 1863, in Bridgton); m(2), 24 Sept. 1864,

HARRIET ELIZABETH BRAY (b. 9 May 1834, in Bridgton, ME). Jonathan was a

traveling salesman and was residing in Portland, ME, in 1901. Three

children: HARRY GLAZIER EASTMAN, b. in Gorham, ME, 5 Dec. 1861; JACOB

HERBERT EASTMAN, b. in Bridgton, ME, 18 March 1863 and d. 14 Sept. 1865;

and RUTH CAROLINE EASTMAN, b. in Gorham, ME, 26 May 1867.

(1.4) CAROLIN CLEMENT EASTMAN, dau. of Jonathan & Phebe, b. 14 June

1833; d. 23 June 1902; buried with husband at Chatham Center Cemetery;

m., 26 Oct. 1862, ITHIEL E. CLAY of Chatham (See family of James Clay).

(1.5) MARY ANN EASTMAN, dau. of Jonathan & Phebe; b. 17 Dec. 1835, in

Chatham; d. 16 June 1866; buried with husband at Chandler Cem., N.

(1.6) KIMBALL EASTMAN, son of Jonathan & Phebe, b. 21 March 1839, in

Chatham; m., 16 Sept. 1862, PHEBE COFFIN CLEMENT (b. 12 Nov. 1839, in

Gorham, ME), dau. of Samuel R. & Hannah (Fogg) Clement of West Gorham, ME

(Kimball and Phebe were first cousins). Kimball was a merchant, residing

in Westbrook, ME, in 1901. Five children, as follows:

(2) PHILIP EASTMAN, son of Asa & Mary, b. 5 Feb. 1799, in Chatham; d. 7

Aug. 1869, in Saco, ME; m., 23 July 1827, MARY AMBROSE (b. 23 July 1802,

in Concord, NH), dau. of Stephen & Hannah (Eastman) Ambrose. Philip

graduated from Bowdoin College in 1820 and became a lawyer, practicing in

North Yarmouth, Harrison, and finally Saco, ME. He served as a

Cumberland County Commissioner and in the Maine State Senate. He was a

member of the Maine Historical Society, for several years was a trustee

of Bowdoin College, and from 1863 to 1869 was president of the Saco

National Bank. Four children: ELLEN J. EASTMAN, b. 28 Jan. 1829,

unmarried, res. Saco, 1901; AMBROSE EASTMAN, b. 18 Apr. 1834; m.

Charlotte S. Haines, graduate of Bowdoin College, a lawyer in Boston, MA,

no children; EDWARD EASTMAN, b. 3 Apr. 1837, d. 5 July 1882 in Saco, m.

Nellie Chase, graduate of Bowdoin College, businessman in Saco, served in

Maine State Legislature; MARY SEARLE EASTMAN, b. 2 July 1842, residing

in Saco, 1902, unmarried.

(3) SUSAN (or SUSANNA) EASTMAN, dau. of Asa & Mary, b. 16 May 1801, in

Chatham; d. 22 January 1870, in New Bedford, MA; m. Dr. Elijah Colby of

Concord, NH (b. 18 June 1798, in Hopkinton, NH; d. 30 Aug. 1856, in New

Bedford; five children.

(4) ELIZA EASTMAN, dau. of Asa & Mary, b. 20 or 28 Feb. 1803; d. 24

January 1805.

(5) MOLLY (or Mary) CHANDLER EASTMAN, dau. of Asa & Mary, b. 15 Sept.

1804, in Chatham; d. 16 Oct. 1854, in New Bedford, MA; m., as his second

wife, Dr. LEVI FOLSOM of Lovell, ME. Dr. Folsom m(1) Abigail Whitaker

(1810-1833) of Chatham (See family of Nathaniel Whitaker). Levi and

Molly had two children: Abbie Eastman Folsom, b. in Limerick, ME, and d.

in New York; and Levi Folsom, Jr.

(6) ROBERT KIMBALL EASTMAN, son of Asa & Mary, b. 8 Nov. 1808, in

Chatham; d. 9 Dec. 1876, in Stockton, CA; m. Mrs. FANNIE BARTLETT (d.

Sept. 1869) of Stockton, CA, formerly of Plymouth, NH.

(7) ASA PARKER EASTMAN, son of Asa & Mary, b. 8 March 1810, in Chatham;

d. 23 July 1869, in Chatham; buried with wife at Eastman Cemetery, N.

Chatham; m., 18 January 1834, LAVINIA FARNUM (b. 22 May 1814, in Concord,

NH; d. 1874), dau. of Moses & Esther (Carter) Farnum. Resided in Chatham

and had four children, as follows:

(7.1) MARY ESTHER EASTMAN, dau. of Asa P. & Lavinia, b. 2 March 1835 or

1836; d. 19 Aug. 1853; buried at Eastman Cem., N. Chatham.

(7.2) JANNETT FARNUM EASTMAN, dau. of Asa P. & Lavinia, b. 12 June 1837;

d. 6 April 1907; buried with husband at Eastman Cem., N. Chatham; m., 8

May 1873, CALVIN S. OSGOOD (b. 1835; d. 11 June 1882), son of Caleb &

Dolly Osgood of Fryeburg, ME. Resided with Jannett's brother, Robert K.

Eastman, in Chatham; no children.

(7.3) MOSES FARNUM EASTMAN, son of Asa P. & Lavinia, b. 16 May 1841; d.

29 May 1842; buried at Eastman Cem., N. Chatham.

(7.4) ROBERT KIMBALL EASTMAN, son of Asa P. & Lavinia, b. 19 Aug. 1854;

d. 13 Aug. 1926; buried at Eastman Cem., N. Chatham. Resided in Chatham,

never married.

(8) LUCY ELIZA EASTMAN, dau. of Asa & Mary, b. 7 June 1813, in Chatham;

d. 9 Nov. 1839, in Concord, NH; m., 22 Dec. 1836, ISAAC EMERY (b. 22 Aug.

1807; d. 31 Jan. 1879, in Concord, NH) of Concord, NH.

(9) ESTHER JOHNSON EASTMAN, dau. of Asa & Mary, b. 28 June 1816, in

Chatham; m., 23 Jan. 1842, in New Bedford, MA, HORACE GUSHEE (b. 25 Apr.

1815, in Dighton, MA). He resided in New Bedford until 22 Feb. 1849,

when he went to California, where his wife joined him 2 April 1854. They

lived in San Francisco, where he was engaged in a commission business for

nine years. He then engaged in the dairy business for three years at
