Katie Holmes As Joey |
Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Holmes began acting in high school theater productions in spite of a personal belief that acing careers couldn't be sustained living in the Midwest. "Toledo is a bit bigger than Capeside [the fictional location of DAWSON'S CREEK], but there are similarities," she says. "I'm a small town girl just like Joey. I wasn't the one that had the boys in high school. I was a little bit of a tomboy and also the youngest in my family, so I thought I knew everything. Like Joey, I made a lot of mistakes, but fortunately, I haven't had the tragedy that she's experienced in her life." Her character, Joey Potter, Holmes explains, "is a high school girl that uses a tough attitude as a guard because she's been through so much. She's been hurt so many times that she doesn't want to be vulnerable and put herself out there for everyone. She lost her mom [to cancer] and her dad's in prison. Her relationship with Dawson has been the only stable thing in her life, and now that it's gone through so many changes, she has to assess who she really is and wants to become. Pacey, her former sparring partner, has helped her a lot through the past year when she felt really lost, and the relationship she's now building with him is perhaps the most adult one she's ever had." While she's become a TV favorite in this teen role, Holmes was the first of the DAWSON'S CREEK cast to establish herself as a film star with a variety of challenging roles to her credit. Over the last hiatus, she completed filming on Paramount's new thriller "Abandon" co-starring Benjamin Bratt and Zooey Deschanel, and written and directed by Stephen Gaghan the award-winning writer of "Traffic." Holmes has experienced incredible success, landing major parts in both feature films and television projects while participating in only a handful of auditions. Her very first professional audition resulted in a plum role in the award-winning film, "The Ice Storm," directed by Ang Lee ("Sense & Sensibility"). Subsequently, Holmes has appeared in a number of films including "Wonder Boys" co-starring Michael Douglas, Frances McDormand, Robert Downey Jr. and Tobey Maguire, "Disturbing Behavior," co-starring Nick Stahl; "Teaching Mrs.Tingle," marking Kevin Williamson's directorial debut; and the feature "Go!" directed by Doug Liman ("Swingers"). Most recently, Holmes was seen in "The Gift," directed by Sam Raimi. Holmes put her acceptance to the prestigious Columbia University on hold and is now living in Wilmington, North Carolina while working on DAWSON'S CREEK . |
