The Human Condition Journal
Key Point of the Chapter -
The Human Condition
The Human Condition, as defined by many philosophers is the situation or condition, in which every human finds himself or herself by virtue of being human. In simpler terms, it means what happens to you because you are human. Blaise Pascal said that man's normal state of being is full of inconstancy, boredom and anxiety. He also said that Humans rarely think of the present, always the past and future, and when we are concerned with the present it is only to see how it affects our future. The most important idea, to me, of Pascal is that all men seek happiness without exception. I think this is very true, but it is also a big problem in the world today. To many people have sex and do drugs because it makes them happy but they tota;lly negate all their responsibilities to society. Another famous philoser, possibly the most well known of all time, is Buddha, or Siddhartha Gautama. Buddha's main idea was dukkha, the Firth Noble Truth, translated as suffering. He submits that misery is at the core of the human heart. Because of this we distract ourselves with euphemisms, illustrated by George Carlin.
Three Main Ideas of the Section
1) "Concupiscence"
Concupiscence is the idea that you know what is right and wrong and you do what is wrong and you don't know why. Many philosophers and people of great intelect have wrestled with this topic, especially Saint Paul. He said to the people of Rome that he doesn't do what he wants, he does what he hates. He also says that when he tries to do good evil takes over his body. Concupiscence is also demonstrated by the song "Cats in the Cradle", made popular by Cat Stevens. The songs talks about the father not making time for the sons though he knows he should, and then later the son doing the same thing. Evereyone is guilty of concupiscence.
2) "George Carlin's Euphemisms"
George Carlin, a famous entertainer, has a very interesting and hillarious peice about euphemisms. He said that he hates euphemisms and American English is loaded with them. that is a true statement. Instead of saying that someone is fat we say heavy or big boned. I think you should tell people they are fat so they have the motivation to do something about it. He also says that Americans have trouble facing the truth, I couldn't tell you how many times per day i hear someone say "I don't want to know". I always want to know what is going on, callme nosy but I hate being out in the cold on something. His closing statement is very powerful and i completely agree with him when he says "white people have created a language to conceal their sins." Like he said in his bit, no one is killed or murdered or killed anymore, they are neutralized, no one is a victim of rape, they are an unwilling sperm recipient. This to me takes the edge off of the phrase and make people more indiferent to it. If I hear my mom was neutralized I don't know what is going on but if I hear someone shot my mom I'm up and fighting.
3) "Delphic Oracle"
This Greek Oracle reveals an important point that people should stop and think about, Humility. According to the Oravcle, Socrates was the wisest man on earth because he realized that he didn't know everything. This is an important issue here and now with sports. I think Marvin Harrison in the best Wide Reciever in the NFL becuase of his numbers and team presence. Most people would claim that Chad Johnson, Randy Moss or Terrell Owens is the dominat reciever, but that is because they get the most Air time. They are good, but they talk a bigger game than they play. The Delphic Oracle showed me that in order to be good at something I must first realize that I have room to improve.
I wonder how many euphemisms are used everyday? I want to write down everytime I hear one and see how many it is....
