Chapter 1

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Juan Santiago asked, looking through the open window of Brenna Brandyn’s bedroom.

“Yes Juan.” She said, her green eyes gleaming. “I’m ready. I have been ready for along time.” She smiled and pulled a strand of hair behind her ear. Her hair was jet black streaked with red and it flowed to her shoulders.

“Well if you’re sure. I don’t want you to do something you don’t want to do.” He told her sincerely. The night air made him shiver. He pulled his black leather jacket tighter around him. He wore a white t-shirt over torn jeans. A green backpack adorned his back.

“I want to Juan.” She looked him in the eye.

“Alright, let’s do it.” She giggled, reaching down to retrieve a blue backpack and tossing it to Juan. He reached out, taking her hand and helping her out the window. She then turned and quietly closed it.

“Are we ready?” She asked. He nodded. “Got protection?” Juan pulled his jacket open and reached into the inside pocket.

“Yep.” He said pulling a Colt 45 pistol out of his pocket. She smiled.

“Just incase we have trouble stowing away on the ship, huh?” She laughed. He grinned. Juan and Brenna have been friends for only a year, but during that short time they experienced a lot together. 17 year old Juan was stood up on the night of his Junior Prom and Brenna was there to take his date’s place. She hated dances, but because it was so important to him, she went along. They made a pact, next year during Senior Prom, whether they were dating anyone or not, they would go to the prom together. The common bond they shared was that they were both adopted. They knew the feeling of not fitting in, of not belonging. Brenna was moved around from foster home to foster home. She was always doing something to get sent away. The only reason she decided to stay in Puerto Rico was because of Juan. She needed him as much as he needed her. Juan was adopted by the Santiago’s when he was a child, so he didn’t have the experience Brenna did, but he knew he didn’t belong. Unlike, Brenna, Juan knew who his real parents were, he’d even met them once. His mother was beautiful. She had dark features, much like his own. She bore a striking resemblance to that model, Brenda Barrett whom Juan had seen on various magazines from the states. Unfortunately his mother Lily was killed a few years ago in an explosion. He didn’t know very much about his father, just that he worked in New York and was very well respected. What he did was far from his knowledge. His name was Michael, but everyone called him Sonny. Sonny Corinthos. And Juan was determined to find him and be just like him.

“Aren’t you cold?” He asked Brenna. Brenna pushed her hair off her bare shoulders and straightened the straps of her crop top, before smoothing out the wrinkle in her tight jeans.

“Nope. I feel fine. Come on let’s go before I change my mind.” She told him and the two started off on their journey. “Port Charles, here we come!”

They had no problem stowing away on one of the ships leaving the harbor. They just weren’t sure where that ship was going. They took cover behind some old crates the ship was delivering.

“So what do we do now?” Brenna asked. Juan was the leader, she was just along for the thrill of doing something bad. She loved being a rebel, which is why she was always in trouble back home. It excited her.

“Now we go to sleep.” Juan said leaning against the crate. She sighed and moved beside him, laying her head on his shoulder. He put his arm around her and the two drifted off to sleep.

The next morning Brenna awoke alone. She knew it was morning only because a small speck of light showed through a crack in the ceiling. Other than that it was pitch black. She looked around. Juan was nowhere to be seen.

“Oh God.” She said out loud. “He probably went to find some food. Yeah that’s it.” She assured herself. “But what if he got caught?” She started to panic. “What if he got caught and I am left down here all alone to figure out where the hell we’re going?” She started talking rapidly, which she tended to do when she was excited. “And then I will have to go find Sonny by myself and then he wont believe I am a friend of his son’s and they will take Juan to jail and I’ll never see him again.” She paused. “Oh my God then I would have to explain to Mr. and Mrs. Santiago and…”

“Brenna…chill!” A voice came from behind her. She twirled around to see Juan standing there.

“Juan!” She screamed and ran to him.

“Shhh!” He told her. “Do you want to get caught?”

“Caught? I thought you were already caught! Where have you been and why did you just leave me?” She asked.

“I went to see if I could find out where we were going and I left you because you were asleep and I didn’t want to wake you.”

“Well?”

“Well what?”

“Well did you find out where we are going?” Brenna asked.

“Yep. We are on our way to Florida.” Juan told her sitting down behind the crate.

“Florida!? We need to get to New York!”

“Then they will make a brief stop at the New York Harbor to pick up some kind of shipment before moving on to Dublin where the next drop off is.”

“So all we have to do is figure out when we are at the New York harbor. But, how will we know? We can’t see a thing.”

“We should get there on…” He cringed. “Thursday.”

“Thursday!” She screamed. Here it comeS he thought. “Today is Sunday! We have to stay on this ship, down here in this gloomy storage area for three more days without a shower or food?”

“No.” He told her. She calmed down a bit. “I brought some food with us.” He grinned. “Remind me never to agree to anything you ask ever again!” Brenna put her head in her hands.

They two lived on peanut butter sandwiches and bottled water for 5 days. The ship took a wrong turn and were thrown off coarse causing them to arrive at the harbor later than expected. Brenna was miserable. Neither of them had had a bath in days. The only contact they had with water was what was bottled. Brenna even doused her self with it, but what was the use? She had no soap or shampoo! They were both ready and eager to get off that ship and onto firm ground. They grabbed their bags and snuck up to the deck, still hiding behind a large mast positioned in the front of the ship. The ship docked and a single person was sent to retrieve the mysterious shipment. Juan and Brenna watched as the person spoke to a man dressed in black. They couldn’t hear was being said, but they figured it was probably something illegal being shipped. The man in black gave the crewman a medium sized box and a handful of money. The crewman nodded and started back to the ship.

“Now’s our chance.” Juan said.

“What?” Brenna asked. She wasn’t sure if she had heard him right.

“Go!” He screamed as he started running. She followed staying right behind him. The crewman turned and yelled something. The man in black called some of his men and they went after the two teens.

“Oh my God!” Brenna screamed. Juan moved where she was in front of him. If they were caught he wanted to make it where she could get away.

“Just run!” Juan kept screaming. They ran faster than they had ever ran before. They turned a corner and came to an alley. They continued down the alley. Soon they reached a division., that was created by two apartment building sitting side by side It was big enough for Juan and Brenna to get through, but not for the men. Juan and Brenna darted through it and turned as soon as they reached the other side. They soon came to an old rundown auto garage and ducked inside. After about six minutes of sitting, waiting, not making a sound they decided the men were gone.

“We made it.” Juan told her.

“We made it!” Brenna screamed throwing her arms around him, then pulling away. “And we stink.” She said disgustedly. “Let’s fine a motel. I took all the money to my name out of the bank, so we have some to spend.” Juan nodded and the two left the garage and started off down the street.

People walked around everywhere. Stores of various kinds lined the streets. Some people walked quickly, trying to get places and others just sauntered along.

“Maybe we should ask?” Brenna told Juan. Without letting him answer she stopped the first available person. “Um, excuse me we need some help.” The young woman smiled pleasantly. She looked about the same age as them. He brown hair was cut in long layers that framed her face. “Forgive us, we have been on a ship for five days.” Brenna emphasized the five. “Five days, can you imagine five days without a shower?” The woman shook her head. “We are new in town, and we really need a non-expensive place to stay. Somewhere with food…and hot water. Hot water, soap, shampoo…” Brenna rambled. “Do you know of any?”

“Well there’s Kelly’s.” The young woman said. “It’s a bar actually, but there are rooms upstairs. It’s really cheap, but really nice. Sometimes Tammy allows people to work for food and board. I am sure if you tell her your situation she would set you up with all the necessities.”

“Oh really? Oh that sounds great!” Brenna said excitedly. The young woman smiled. “Oh, I’m sorry, how rude of me. Hello, my name is Brenna and this is…”She paused. “My uh…brother Juan.” Juan gave her a weird look. “Say hi, Juan.” Juan greeted her politly.

“My name is Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Lizzie.” She smiled. “Hey I am on my way to Kelly’s right now. I am a waitress there, how about I walk you?”

“Great, great that sounds great. Thank you soo much Liz.” Brenna paused. “I can call you Liz right? I mean is that okay, because if…”

“Sis…calm down.” Juan said giving her a look. Lizzie laughed and led them down the street to a cute little club. It was really classy looking, not to modern and not to old.

“This place is great, the food is delicious.” Lizzie led them to the counter. “You should try the chili.” She advised them.

“But if you’re looking for cheese fries, try Luke’s.” A tall curly headed blond said coming up behind the counter. “Hello I am Tammy.” She said extending her hand. Brenna shook her hand, then Juan.

“This is Brenna and her brother Juan. They just moved to PC and they need a place to stay that’s not to expensive. I kinda suggested they try here, because you sometimes let people work for food and board.” Lizzie said hopefully. Tammy nodded and looked at the two.

“You like to work hard?” She asked.

“Juan will do anything for food.” Brenna told her. They laughed.

“Well there just so happens to be a vacant room upstairs.” Tammy said pulling some keys out from under the counter.

“With a shower” Brenna asked. Tammy nodded. “And soap?” She nodded again. “And shampoo?” Tammy laughed.

“Yes, all the necessities.”

“Oh thank you soo much!” Brenna said excitedly. “You don’t know how happy you’ve made me.”

“Brenna calm down.” Juan told her.

“Calm down? No, I haven’t had a shower or a decent meal in five days. Don’t you even tell me to calm down.” She smiled at Tammy and reached out her hand. “When do we start working?”

“Tomorrow.” Tammy smiled dropping a key into her hand.

“Cool. Thank you much.” She grabbed Juan’s hand and pulled him along with her. “Come on brother dear.” Tammy and Lizzie laughed.

Brenna and Juan reached the second floor and found the room. They unlocked it and waked in. There were only two rooms. The main room and a bathroom. The main room consisted of a bed, nightstand, TV, couch and dining area, which included a table and two chairs.

“No kitchen?” Juan asked out loud.

“No doofus, why would their be a kitchen if there is a bar downstairs?” Brenna asked. She unzipped her backpack and dumped everything onto the bed. She brought only two outfits, the one she was wearing and one she packed. She pulled the jeans, baby T-shirt and under clothes from her bag and ran for the bathroom. “I am taking a shower! I will see you like next century!” Juan laughed.

Well we’re finally here. He thought, smiling to himself. Now we just have to ask around, gain information and then I’ll get to see my father again.
