Malachi means 'My Messenger' in Hebrew. Since the prophet himself is given no name, the author of the book uses this as a a proper name. Malachi is sometimes spelled Malachias. Since Malachi's book is the last of the old testament, Malachi is sometimes known as the last canonical prophet

The exact date of the writing of the book is unknown, though an approximate date would be around 460 B.C. There is no information about the prophet himself; the book is composed entirely of prophecy. Malachi preached against the Israelite community as a whole, expressing God's anger at how the so-called 'chosen people' were repaying God for his love.
