Wigton Parish Registers:
Wigton Church, dedicated to St. Mary’s, is a large elegant fabric, which was built in 1788, on the site of the ancient structure, said to have been erected by Odard, the first baron of Wigton, with materials brought from the Roman Station at Old Carlisle. Lady Margaret de Wigton gave this church to the Abbey of Holme Cultram, for the better support of that convent after the devastation made by the Scots. The vicarial stipend was fixed at 26 marks of silver yearly, to be paid by the convent, with one messuage and ten acres of land in the vill of Kirkland, and one acre of land in Wigton, near the mansion house. The patronage of the vicarage was reserved to the Bishop of Carlisle for the time being, as it still continues. The church is the only episcopal place of worship in the whole of this populous parish; but there are in the town four dissenting chapels viz., the Friend’s Meeting House in Allonby Road, the Independent Calvinist Chapel, at Market Hall, built in 1819, and two Wesleyan Methodist Chapels, one of which is an old building (erected in 1788) in Meeting House Lane, and the other is a neat edifice, built in 1828, in George Street.
