The Irish civil register has evolved over the years. The initial registers were by complete years until 1878 when they started to report by quarter. In 1881 entries appear at the back of the December quarter to capture births, marriages and deaths that occurred but were not registered until 12 months or more had past. In 1884, the end of the December quarter another separate register is added to comply with the 1879 Army Act for Irish nationals serving overseas and finally in 1887 a further register is added to the end of the December register recorded Marine Deaths.
In 1922, the Irish Republic was formed and the registers are split into two, those serving the Republic of Ireland and those of Northern Ireland.
Bold entries marked with an asterisk indicates a copy of the certificate is held in the files and is available to you.
