1881 Census.

The 1881 Census for the whole of England, Wales & Scotland has been indexed by the County Family History Societies in coordination with the LDS church and the results published on microfiche. Listed below are the extracted entries for all the Ismays.

It is interesting to review this data on a larger scale as well as searching for our individual ancestors. For instance, Ismays were found in 14 out of 41 counties in England, 2 out of 29 in Scotland with no occurrences in Wales, Channel Isles, or the Isle of Man. A study of the numbers of entries per county provides the following data

It is also interesting to note the types of employment our Ismay ancestors were engaged in. I have extracted and listed the various occupations and number of occurrences of each. As you will see there is a wide range of occupations from those that had independent means to those, who one can easily imagine, life was a constant struggle. The impact of the industrialization of England can be inferred in the number of trades in the manufacturing industries and the distances people have moved from their original birth place to their place of employment.
