WORKS PERFORMED

  1. Processional, for brass quintet, is a short, tonal work with a Baroque flavor. Composed as the bridal march for a friend's wedding, it's a brief 1'10."(published by Wehr's Music House**)

  2. The title track of this disc, Chorales & Imitations, is an exciting, bitonal work for 9 brass (2,3,2,1,1) that passes from fast to slow tempos and back. A "good blow" with many solos, it lasts a little over five minutes. (published by Cimarron Music and Productions**)

  3. Three Pieces in the Olden Style, for brass quartet (2 trps, horn, trb), is a 3 movement, 7 and 1/2 minute piece in a "Neo-Renaissance" style. The first two movements (Moderato, Adagio) feature alternations of contrapuntal and chorale style, while the third movement (Allegro) is an energetic fugue. (Wehr's Music House)

  4. Brass Quintet No.4 is a four minute piece that again combines/alternates contrapuntal and chorale-like styles, but with more advanced harmonies. Each player plays an important role, and the tempo is a varied moderato throughout. (Wehr's Music House)

  5. Chorale for O.M.S. is a slow, tonal work that starts in Eb and moves to Gb before returning home. It begins quietly, works its way to a modest climax, and then closes softly. The low brass are featured, both at the beginning and end. For brass nonet, it lasts a little over three minutes. (Cimarron Music & Productions)

  6. Five Bagatelles, for solo tuba, is a set of five contrasting movements (Fanfare, Broadly, Scherzo, Reflective, and Dance) that last a total of about 6 and 1/2 minutes. Tonally and/or modally centered, the technical demands are modest, but the work requires a competent player. (Published by the TUBA)

  7. Quiescence, for solo Bb trumpet and piano (here, sequencer), is a lyrical, tonal ballad that is primarily in 5/4. This piece is accessible to most players in regard to range, endurance, and technical areas. It has been very well received in church performances. (Wehr's Music House)

  8. Brass Quintet No.5 is a challenging, yet wholly tonal/modal work that gives all members of the quintet a strong test. Technical facility is modest, but melodic angularity can pose some difficulties. Lots of duet work throughout. Fanfare opening leads to a fast main section, followed by a slow, lyrical one, then a second fast section, and a final, "echo," coda. It's duration is nearly 7 minutes. (Wehr's Music House)

  9. Holiday Fanfare, for 2 trumpets, is in three contrasting sections (f-s-f), and under 2 minutes in length. The fast sections are in a rollicking, angular 6/8 while the slower section is a lyrical 4/4. Implied lydian harmonies and open 5ths and 7ths are common. (Cimarron Music & Productions)

  10. Distance: A Lament, for brass octet (2,3,2,1), is another melodic work that moves from a slow A minor opening to a powerful quartal section, and a quiet finish back in A minor. About 3'30" in duration. (Cimarron Music & Productions)

  11. Of Joyous & Honorable Times is a light, tonal work, again with a Renaissance- like approach. This work, for trumpet quartet, uses piccolo and 3 Bbs, is technically very approachable and lasts about 3'45." (Wehr's Music House)

  12. Heritage is another piece for brass nonet, has echoes of Copland (along with Stravinsky and Shostakovich, my first compositional heroes), and uses simple melodies with occasionally tight harmonies and soloistic playing. Duration is about 3 and 1/2 minutes. (Cimarron Music & Productions)

  13. Insecta, for solo trumpet, is a non-tonal work that employs graphic notation and extended techniques. Five movements last a total of about 7 and 1/2 minutes. The entire dynamic and melodic ranges of the trumpet are employed, reaching from low Gb to high F. The highly angular melodic lines are aurally demanding. (Unpublished)

  14. Quite aptly, the closing work on the disc is entitled Recessional, and is the companion piece to the Processional. Again for brass quintet, this is a light, fun piece with a very singable melody that is passed back and forth with its accompanying motive between all members of the group before the final closing tutti.
