Apologetics and Faith Journal

         1. Summary of the Key Idea

The main topic of this section deals with Christian apologetics, a defense of the Faith by showing that the weight of the evidence - scientific and philosophical, and theological - favors Christianity. This evidence comes from the natural world and the human person. The book gives some examples about teleological arguments, meaning that the universe was purposefully created. These examples are William Paley's analogy of "The Watch and the Watchmaker," the Golden Ratio, the Anthropic Principle, the Kalam Argument, argument from Degrees of Perfection, and C.S. Lewis's Moral Argument.

Three of the most important ideas from this section

One of the most important ideas that I want to remember from this section is C.S. Lewis's Moral Argument for the existence of God. In his argument, he says how there is a universal moral law that applies to everyone and since there is a universal moral law, there has to be a law maker, and we believe that law maker to be God. I find this argument to be sufficient is saying that God exists because in his argument he also gives reasons how people would see his premises to be false and then he defends his argument, showing that none of the premises were false.

Another important idea that I want to remember is the five basic inclinations of human nature. These inclinations are to seek happiness, to preserver oneself in existence, to preserve the species, to live in comunity with others, and to use intellect and will. I want to remember these because I found that these apply to my life and they apply for every human being because it is our human nature to want these things.

The final idea that I want to remember from this section is the Golden Ratio. I think it is interesting that an irrational number can appear throughout all kinds of natural bodies. It is found in artwork, music, and electronics such as the iPhone because it is pleasing to the eye. This is a good argument for the existence of God because it shows that the universe exhibits intelligent design.

         3. One image that reminds me of Jesus

Image is from this website

I like this picture of Jesus because it shows Him looking down at a world full of sin and wars which was not what he was teaching us when He was here on Earth.

         4. Short reflection of who Jesus is

I believe that Jesus is God's son, sent down to Earth to teach us about God and to prepare us for the kingdom of heaven. I also believe that He is God and man. I believe that He is one of the greatest moral teachers of all time. I don't think He preached lies because if He did, then he would be considered crazy and a liar. After Jesus died and rose, the Apostles got the strength they needed to go out and preach about Jesus and eventually be martyred in His name. Jesus's message is still present in our world today.
