CHAPTER SIXTY-FIVE
THE PARK:
Sonny(finally caught up with Carly and found her crying on the park bench by the fountain. He sat down beside her and gently pushed her hair out of her eyes)Carly, I should have never left you. Just what did Dr. Meadows say?
Carly(looked at Sonny with wet eyes)She said the baby is fine. That even though she’s small, she’s developing normally.
Sonny: (cupped her face in the palm of his hands and dried her tears with the pads of his thumbs)Then why are you acting like this? Why did you slap me and say I was right.
Carly(pulled away from him)Because you are. No sooner did Dr. Meadows tell me our daughter was fine, then Stefan Cassadine comes up to me and tells me I’m his daughter and he’s needs one of my kidneys.
Sonny: What?
Carly: It’s true, Sonny. So, you were right. You said even if the baby were healthy something would happen to cause me to lose her. (she placed her hand over her stomach protectively) Our daughter has survived so much, Sonny. She survived something her brother wasn’t able to survive. But she’s just a little baby. How much more is she supposed to survive. If I have to give Stefan Cassadine one of my kidneys I just know we’re going to lose the baby.
Sonny(pulled her into his arms as she began crying again)First of all, you don’t have to do anything. If you don’t want to give Stefan Cassadine one of your kidneys, you don’t have to. So what if you’ve found out he’s your father. He’s played on part in your life up until now when he comes to you holding his hand out to you wanting one of your body parts. Secondly, we don’t know if you’re even a compatible donor for him. So you may be worrying about nothing. And, thirdly, neither one of us is a doctor. We don’t know the baby would be put at risk is you donated one of your kidneys to Stefan Cassadine. So why don’t we just go back to the hospital and see Dr. Meadows and find out just what we’re dealing with, here.
Carly(gave him a searching look)Who are you Sonny Corinthos? (she held his face in her hands)One minute you’re telling me the baby isn’t going to live and the next you’re comforting me and assuring me our baby will be fine. (she wrapped her arms around him)Whoever you are I know I couldn’t live without you.
Sonny: Let’s go and see Dr. Meadows.
Carly: Okay. And after that, I want to go see my mother. She has a lot of explaining to do.
BOBBIE’S ROOM, GENERAL HOSPITAL:
Stefan(stared down broodingly at a still unconscious Bobbie. She had a square bandage on her forehead where her head had hit the floor)Dr. Jones, why hasn’t she woken up, yet? Is this normal?
Tony: Bobbie suffered a severe trauma both mentally and physically. When that happens sometimes the body shuts completely down to heal itself. Bobbie isn’t comatose. She’s just unconscious. I’ll be back later to check in on her.
Stefan: (sat down on the bed beside her and ran his hands up her body with a possessive air about him.)I suppose I can understand why you don’t want to wake up, Barbara. You’ve left quite a little mess behind, haven’t you? (he caressed her hair)I’ll have you know I told Caroline she’s our daughter. She didn’t take it very well. No doubt because I just blurted it out thinking you had already told her.(by this time he was practically laying on top of Bobbie like a lover in the act of making love) That’s yet another thing you shall pay for. (he caressed her face) Never doubt that for one minute. You will pay. I’ve even begun to think of a way I can make you start paying the debt you owe me. (his lips were so close to hers they were almost touching) As soon as you wake up I’ll be sure to tell you all about it .(he leaned down and put his mouth close to her ear)So sleep well, Barbara. This is bound to be the last bit of peace you’ll know for quite some time to come.
DR. MEADOW’S OFFICE, GENERAL HOSPITAL:
Sonny(finished explaining the situation to Dr. Meadows)So, what does all this mean for Carly and the baby.
Carly: If I give Stefan Cassadine one of my kidneys will it put my baby’s life at risk?
Dr. Meadows; I’d like to say no, but this baby has already been through the trauma of you falling down the stairs and almost dying. Even if the earlier event hadn’t occurred the stress of surgery could cause you to miscarry. Then there’s the added stress on your body of being pregnant and having only one kidney. You could miscarry at any time. I’m not saying this is a foregone conclusion. But if you do go through with this your pregnancy will be at risk.
Carly(started to lose it again)My god, what am I going to do? I don’t want to lose my baby.
Dr. Meadows: We could be worrying about a situation that won’t even occur. What I suggest you do is get yourself tested to see if you’re a compatible donor for Mr. Cassadine, then if you are you and Sonny will have to decide what you want to do next.
Sonny(helped a shaky Carly to her feet)Come on. Let’s just do it and get it over with.
Carly:(suddenly grew angry)Fine, and as soon as I’m finished my mother and I are going to have a little talk about what she‘s done to me.(she stormed out of the doctor’s office ahead of Sonny).
