CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN

JET EN ROUTE TO ENGLAND:

Carly:(pulls the bed sheets more closely around her and backs away from him)You don’t want to have a baby? You mean now, right? You don’t mean not ever?(she could see that’s exactly what he meant) What? I was good enough to have your child when it’s conception was an accident, but when it’s not I’m not?

Sonny: This isn’t about you, it’s about me. Any child of mine will die before it can ever be born. I’ve had to grieve two children that died before they even got a chance to live and I’ve had enough. I’m not going to do it again. I’m not going to give my heart and soul to another child only to have my heart ripped out when it dies. I just don’t have it in me anymore to put myself through that again.

Carly: So you’re not even willing to try to have another child with me?

Sonny: Why try to have another baby when I know it’ll only end up dying. I’ve gotten the message. I’m not meant to have a child of my own. I’ve reconciled myself to that and I’ve made peace with it. I’ll settle for being the best father I can be to Michael and giving him all the love I would have given a child of my own.

Carly: Sonny, this is ridiculous. Our baby didn’t die because of some divine judgment from on high that you’re not supposed to have a child of your own. Our baby is dead because of some drunken loser who wasn’t happy until he made us as miserable and unhappy as he is.

Sonny: Come on, Carly. I was going to have two babies and they both died before they were born. It’s a sign I’m not meant to have a child.

Carly: Oh for god’s sake, Sonny, would you stop thinking that every bad thing that happens to you is some sign from on high. I hate to disappoint you, Sonny, but you haven’t seen a burning bush. Your first child died because Hernando Rivera put a bomb in your car. It wasn’t an act of god. It was an act of man. If God had any part of that tragedy it was he didn’t want you to die in that explosion. And our baby was perfectly healthy. He would have been born and lived a long and happy life if not for AJ Quartermaine. God had no part in that, either. (she takes his hand and places it on her stomach)Sonny, I want to have your baby. I want to feel your baby growing inside me. And when he’s born, I want to see the look on your face when I place our baby in your arms. Don’t you want that, too.

Sonny(pulls his hand away from her stomach)We have Michael, we don’t need another child. Michael will be enough for both of us.

Carly: You won’t even consider trying to have another child with me to see if you’re wrong, will you?

Sonny: I can’t. If we did and we lost that baby, too, I don’t think either one of us could handle it and I’m not willing to take the risk on the off-chance the baby might actually live to be born.

DR. MEADOWS OFFICE, GENERAL HOSPITAL:

Tony(enters)You wanted to see me?

Dr. Meadows: I know Bobbie Spencer is your ex-wife. Do you think it’s possible you could find out how we could contact her daughter on her honeymoon.

Tony: Why? Is something wrong?

Dr. Meadows: I noticed something strange when I was examining Carly so I had some tests run on her. You’re not going to believe this. There’s another baby.

Tony: What!

Dr. Meadows: Near as I can tell Carly was pregnant with twins and only one of the babies died.

Tony: How is that possible. We ran tests when she was brought in. Only one baby showed up on the ultrasound that we did. And when we took the baby we saw no evidence of there being another child.

Dr. Meadows: Maybe that’s because you weren’t looking for it. You thought there was only one child, so you wouldn’t have been looking for evidence of another. Tony, the same thing happened when I did an ultrasound on Carly and we found out she was expecting a son. The other child didn’t show up. The nearest I can figure is the surviving child was too small to show up on the ultrasound. Sometimes with multi-births one child can take up most of the space in the womb preventing the other child from growing and flourishing. If this child’s brother hadn’t been taken odds this baby would have died, instead.

Tony: If the other child was preventing this child from developing and growing normally just what kind of shape is this child in.

Dr. Meadows: That’s what I’m worried about. That’s why we need to get Carly back here, immediately. We need to run tests on this child to find out if its healthy or it will be born with health problems. And once we know the truth, Sonny and Carly are going to have to decide if they want to continue with this pregnancy.

VISITOR’S ROOM, PORT CHARLES COUNTY JAIL:

Roy: What do you want, Mrs. Cassadine.

Helena: I want to take over Sonny Corinthos’ mob and I want you to help me do it.

Roy: That’s blunt. Why would you think I’d be willing to betray Sonny for you.

Helena: Because I’m willing to help you get out of jail and he isn’t.

Roy: Sonny said there was nothing he could do because the charges against me hinged on Stefan Cassadine.

Helena: Stefan is my son and I have ways of getting him to do what I want him to do. If I could help you out of your current legal problems, would you be willing to help me in return.

Roy: In other words, you’ll scratch my back if I scratch yours.

Helena: Precisely, so do we have a deal.

Roy: I don’t know. It doesn’t sit right with me betraying Sonny like that. He’s been good to me.

Helena: Mr. DeLucca, loyalty is fine, but will it get you out of here or help you find the Sex Toy Stalker so you can avenge your daughter’s death?

Roy: All right, Mrs. Cassadine, you‘ve made you’re point. You’ve got yourself a deal. If you can get me out of here, I’ll help you take over the mob from Sonny. Sorry, Sonny, we’ve all got to do what we’ve got to do.
