I must admit, there is always a thrill when another War of the Worlds goodie arrives in the post, so it was with shaking hands that I unwrapped the small brown envelope from Pendraken, looking for all the world like a Vampire receiving a message from the ministry of Defence as I stood by my mailbox. Cackling away to myself I swooped inside and carefully arrayed the contents upon the coffee table. Three legs, three feet, a body and a heat ray. The casting was very nice, crisp with barely a hint of flash or mould lines. The sculpting on the other hand looked downright wobbly. It still does, but then it would be a mistake to ignore this piece because of it, it is in fact half its charm. Wobblyness can ruin a miniature, the dreadful Games Workshop Hive Tyrant is a good example (I can’t believe I paid good money for that! Anyone contemplating one should buy the resin winged one from forgeworld instead!). In this case however the result is in a charming, and dare I say even cute, representation of a Martian fighting machine.
I took a quick snap with Mr Rohin’s digital camera and set to glueing it together
Pendraken Miniatures Tripod Miniature Review
It went together quickly and easily, I took another snap of it together with the exception of the heat ray, this seems a bit over-sized and I am tempted to make a smaller one of my own for my next one of these. It is easy enough to paint, a single coat of boltgun metal leaves a bright and gleaming machine, so the only tricky bit is getting that luminous quality to the eyes.
As for accuracy, the design is loosely based on the Jeff Wayne tripod (sometimes referred to as the ‘disco’ tripod) and as such is missing many details from the original text. There are two large indentations in the underside of the body near the legs that would make good attachment places for tentacles for those wishing to convert their tripods.
I give this tripod a 3.
It took some time to gain access to the Pendraken Tripod for this review, Cap’n Bayne ran around shouting ‘it’s mine I tell you, MINE!’ and when I finally obtained it, already glued and painted, he went off in a sulk to play War of the Monsters until I was finished. The miniature, being the small tripod from Pendrakens range. is approximately 42mm tall so it shall be most imposing against the tiny lumps representing PUNY HUMANS at this scale. The sculpting while rough has a wonderful organic curvature to it that provides a nice insectoid look and that shows up nicely with metallic paints. It’s nice and stable without a base and won’t fall over too easilly.
I give this tripod a 3.
