Vilfredo Palombella

At the age of 16, Vilfredo Palombella left home and everything he knew back in Gagliano and came to America.  Through Ellis Island he came to Detroit, where relatives and other Gaglianese who had recently come to the United States helped him in the transition.  Vilfredo landed a job at Ford Motor Company, working on the production line.  Then came World War II, and despite not yet being an American citizen, he was drafted into the United States Army  and sent to Italy, where he saw combat in such notable places as Anzio and Cassino.  He served with honor, and was awarded the Soldier's Metal of Valor for saving his Commanding Officer's life.  During a break in combat, he walked through the mountains to return to Gagliano to visit his mother and other friends and family still there.  His appearance there is still recalled by Gaglianese to this day.  He walked the entire way, as British soldiers refused to pick him up as they passed by, a fact he will eagerly remind you of if you ask him about his journey.  Returning to the States, he married Realina Palombella, and they will celebrate 57 years years of marriage this coming year.  At Ford, where he worked for over 40 years, he  became an electrician at the Rouge plant.  In his retirement he takes great enjoyment in tending to his rose and vegetable gardens, working outside, and reading.  He regular attends Club functions, and has many stories of life back in Gagliano.  His translation of a book of history about Gagliano Aterno led to its publication in English.  Club members enjoy his vino (let's just say it's "strong") and sense of humor.  He came to the United States with virtually nothing, and through his hard work provided for his family and made them proud.
