Cape Fear Isshin-Ryu Productions

Coming Soon: Isshin-Ryu Masters DVD

A Brief Summary of what’s we’re trying to do.

The idea is to create a completely non political, historical Isshin-Ryu DVD that allows the masters of our time display kata as they were taught, and teach in their dojos.

Our goal is to have fifty Isshin-Ryu Masters, ranking at Roku-dan and above to contribute their time to this project.

Once the katas are collected, Cape Fear Isshin-Ryu Productions will produce the DVD and make them available to the Isshin-Ryu community for ten dollars. (close to cost)

So, spread the word!  If you know someone who is at least a 6th dan that would like to be a part of this project, then we would love to hear from them!  Have them email us at:

An Isshin-Ryu Video Series Unlike All Others!

My name is Brent Holland and I am a 4th degree black belt under Kyoshi Tim Cunningham. (7th dan) I am the head instructor of Cape Fear Isshin-Ryu Karate in Wilmington, NC and I have been studying Isshin-Ryu since 1989.

I am also the head of Cape Fear Isshin-Ryu productions which has released three successful instructional videos to date.  I have been working on this project for about a year now and each time I get a new kata submission it is really exciting.  The responses I have gotten so far have been promising and I look forward to being able to get this DVD off the ground in early 2009!

This DVD project is a sincere effort to create a completely non-political historical video that will show as much of Isshin-Ryu as possible.  At this time we are still accepting video submissions and if you are a roku-dan or above and would like to be a part of what we are doing we truly want you to contact us as soon as you can.  This DVD will truly be an extraordinary compilation of different lineages and should be a great way for all of us to give back to the fantastic form of karate Tatsuo Shimabuku created.

So, Who has already submitted videos for this project?

     Tom Lewis

Mitch Kobylanski

Tim Cunningham

Pete Mills

Diane Ortenzio-Cooling

Frank Black

Peter Haddad

Salil Nadkarni

Don Roberts

Robert Slywa

Karl Hovey

Lars Anderson

Imagine if someone had done this 20 years ago!

A Living History

Imagine if someone could have gotten many of the masters we have lost in the past twenty years on tape.

Without a project like this, karate students would likely say the exact same thing twenty years from now!

So please help spread the word!

We are shooting for a March Release date!

Ideally, we would like to shoot for a February or March release date.  Realistically though, it will depend on how many masters complete their video submission by then.  I would like to have at least fifty in hand before I release the video but I am working hard every day to see that this will happen!

I have already started editing the footage I have.  To see an example of what to expect click the video to the right!

So who’s putting this together?

This DVD will contain performances from Isshin-Ryu masters from all over the world. (Masters from India, Australia, and the Netherlands have already submitted their katas for our project!)  Each Sensei will perform their favorite kata, be it empty hand or weapon.  Some have even included their own bunkai for the kata as well.

This DVD will run over an hour and will give you the chance to see the most experienced people in our style perform kata.  This will be a living history that will benefit the entire Isshin-Ryu community!

Over 90 total kata performances done by more than 40 karatekas.

Katas done by all ages, all ranks, and people of all sizes.

Out Takes, Additional Footage and other fun features

Most Isshinryu Videos are more or less the same.  They all have a master of some rank performing the katas on the tape, usually from a couple of different angles, and often in slow motion.  On some of the videos you get some basic bunkai for the moves of the kata.  On almost all of these tapes, the only person performing for the viewer is the head guy, or master who is producing the tape.

On our video the katas are being done by students just like you!  Each kata is broke down into sections where students of similar rank perform the kata.  For instance, Seisan has five chapters….an intro (this has bunkai, history, etc…) a Beginner section (with white, yellow and orange belts) an intermediate section and an advanced section.  Each chapter has 5-10 different people doing the kata.  Boys, Girls, Men and Women from ages 7-55 are all on this video doing the same katas you may be trying to learn now!

The Journey– A Unique Feature of our Videos!

A unique feature of our DVD line is called “The Journey.”  One chapter in each kata is dedicated to show the growth of one student.  In the clip below you will see Jay Graham perform Seisan Kata as a white belt, but the next video you will see is the same student, 4 years later doing the same kata as a black belt!  The differences are amazing and its intriguing to watch.

Unlike  many Isshinryu video series, we decided to put 4 or more katas on each tape that we teach at our dojo.  For $11.99 you get multiple katas so that this series will be economical as well as educational.

2 Hours of Video for only Twelve Dollars?

When we, at Cape Fear Isshinryu decided to do this video series, we wanted to put together a very comprehensive kata DVD that was affordable.  When I came back to Isshinryu in 2000 I spent 120 dollars on a video cassette series that was incredibly inferior in quality to what we are producing for a fraction of the price.  For a returning student wanting to remember kata techniques lost over time, or a lifetime learner wanting a new perspective, 100 dollars or more can be a little daunting...that is why we are doing this very professional, extremely well done series for such a low price.   We want people to be able to afford to own our product and we want to do our part to spread our love for Isshinryu all across the continent.
