MAXIMIZING SYSTEM RESOURCES Oracle’s Multithreaded Server (MTS) can increase the number of simultaneous users accessing a single server. Net8 contains two new features to help sites realize even higher utilization of server resources: connection pooling and the concentrator functionality of the Oracle Connection Manager. When thousands of clients are running interactive applications, many of these sessions may be idle at a given time. Connection pooling enables the server to time-out idle sessions and use that connection to service an active session. The idle logical session remains open and the physical connection is automatically re-established when the next request comes from that session. Connection pooling allows more sessions to the server over a set number of available physical connections. In addition, connection pooling removes the burden of maintaining unused connections, which improves the performance of active sessions. By placing a "hard limit" on the number of physical connections a server must manage, and by using those connections more efficiently, larger numbers of concurrent users can be accommodated with existing hardware for many classes of interactive applications. http://www.oracle.com/o8i/owa/O8i.Search?string=Networking |

TRANSPARENT NETWORKING Net8 provides the industry’s broadest support for network transport protocols including TCP/IP, Novell SPX/IPX, IBM LU6.2, and DECnet. All data conversion using Net8 is invisible to the user and the application. This enables Oracle8 to inter-operate across different types of computers, operating systems, and networks to transparently connect any combination of PC, UNIX, legacy, and other systems without expensive changes to the existing infrastructure. DATA REPRESENTATION AND CHAR-SET INDEPENDENCE Net8 automatically converts between both national-language character sets, such as those used in European and Asian languages, and different computer-architecture character sets such as ASCII and EBCDIC. Net8 allows machines with different word sizes, bit and byte orderings, and native number formats to transparently inter-operate and share data. Additionally, Net8’s extensive national-language character set allows Oracle applications to be deployed in global environments. ACCESS ANYWHERE To enable users to run a client-server application from within a web browser, Net8 offers data access for Java Database Connectivity (JDBC)-based applications that implement a Net8 Java client. Net8 Java client is a small footprint implementation of Net8 that is suitable either for downloading from any web server or for installing on the client machine as a pure Java application. CONNECTIVITY FOR JAVA APPLETS Java applets downloaded from a web server normally only establish connectivity to the machine from which they came. By routing connections through Oracle Connection Manager, JDBC-based applications can take advantage of unrestricted and transparent Net8 connectivity to any Oracle8i™ database in the Internet. |
