October 16, 1999 - near Redding CA - female firefighter struck and killed by watertender during a wildfire
October 1999
New Haven-WTNH) A van and a West Haven ambulance collided while the ambulance was on its way to Yale New Haven Hospital this morning. It happened at North Frontage and Church streets. Five people were in the ambulance when it happened, including an 8-year-old-girl who had been in an earlier accident.
Newschannel 8's Jocelyn Sigue reports that two emergency workers who were with the girl are in extremely critical condition. The girl is also said to be seriously hurt. Everyone involved in the accident had to be taken to the hospital. An eyewitness says the crash was very loud, and she saw glass flying. She says people near the ambulance burst into tears at the scene. Some of the emergency crews who responded work with the people who were hurt. A police team is on the scene, investigating how this happened. They expect to be on the scene for several hours.
October 4, 1999 - Date of Accident - Quebec
One of our colleagues was killed in the line-of-duty yesterday noon in a small town in the Richieleu Valley. (Southern Quebec, Canada). Responding to a call in the first snow of the year, the ambulance crashed into a ditch and flipped over. The accident occurred yesterday morning in Sainte-Anne-de-Sabrevois, near Lacolle (very close to the Canada-U.S. border). The ambulance crew was responding to a car accident with injuries on route 133.
The ambulance technician killed in the line-of-duty was Francois Pichette, 46 years old, who worked for Ambulance 2000 Inc of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. He was the father of three children. He was a twenty-year veteran who leaves his wife and children to mourn his passing. The tiny ambulance company he worked for immediately suspended operations and was replaced in the field by crews from CETAM (the South Shore ambulance service). His partner survived the accident with minor injuries.
Although no cause has been determined for the crash, journalists at Le Journal de Montreal are questioning the state of the ambulance's tires. Barnet Wexler - Paramedic - Urgences Sante de Montreal metro.
