Based on the epic Frank Herbert novel, Davis Lynch brings his usual degree of symbolism and wierdness to an already complex story. 10,000 years in the future on the Planet Dune, giant Sand Worms guard the spice Melange which permits travel through space and time. Two warring royal houses fight for control of the Spice - but it is only the messianic Paul Atreides who has the power to overcome the evil Harkonnens.
Max plays Dr. Kynes - so-called 'Judge of the Change' and the 'Imperial Ecologist' - who has worked on Dune long enough to have the strange glowing blue eyes of those who mine the spice. Because 'water is life' on the desert planet, Kynes invents a 'Still' suit which filters body fluids for drinking. He helps Paul Atreides in the fight against the Harkonnens.
There's alot of thinking-out-loud, from which we gather Dr Kynes is perhaps a mercenery who aware of Paul's messianic potential. It's always a joy to here Max talk about his specialist subject - the etherial. Sadly, Dr Kynes isn't around for long and is put to death by the Harkonnens.
Max's role was expanded for the extended Special TV Edition of the film (running time 180mins as opposed to 131mins of the British VHS release
