The unrecognized virtual C@L Internet Sailing Club, with no authority to conduct much of anything, invites you to join a group of Cal Boat enthusiasts for a weekend at the Isthmus of Catalina Island.
ELIGIBILITY: Actually, any friend of a CAL boat is eligible, but having a CAL boat is preferred. Please register even if not entering the race over to the island and back to Marina del Rey. This so we know who is coming from other ports and how many boats will be present.
ENTRIES: A completed form emailed or faxed by Friday, August 11. Later entries buy a round at the Isthmus.
RULES: The race from Marina del Rey to the Isthmus on Friday, and the return race on Sunday, are governed by common sense, and the basic rules of the road. All boats must fly the C@L Burgee, or reasonable facsimile thereof (Contact Roy Reynolds, CAL-LIST@SAILNET.COM for a burgee). All boats must "check in" with the committee boat on race day prior to the warning horn. A mandatory skippers meeting will be held at 9:00 AM, Friday, August 20, at (TO BE ADVISED)
CLASSES: There will be two classes, Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker.
PROTESTS: Any protests filed will be judged by a vote of the protest committee, which is made up of the boats involved.
HANDICAP SYSTEM: An adjusted handicap system will be used based on So. Cal. PHRF ratings plus or minus listed adjustments.
STARTING TIMES:
FRIDAY, AUG. 18
Marina del Rey
1050 hrs. - Warning horn
1055 - Preparatory horn
1100 - Start, all boats
FRIDAY, AUG. 18
START: The Starting Line will be between the U.S. flag on the detached breakwater, and the "E" racing yellow buoy, approximately 400 yards off the breakwater. Boats "over early" noted by vociferous bellowing by fellow sailors, must return and start properly AFTER all boats have crossed the start line.
COURSE: Proceed on a course of approximately 168 degrees. Keep the El Segundo buoy, "2ES" well to Port. It is also wise to keep the Palos Verdes Peninsula to Port. Proceed across the San Pedro Channel and the Los Angeles shipping lanes; - watch for both incoming and outgoing shipping, and continue toward the Isthmus of Catalina. The finish line will be when the leading point of land on Ship Rock is exactly 90 degrees to Port. Record your time and report it to the committee boat. Ship Rock is one mile North of Isthmus Cove. It looks like a white domed haystack. There is a light on a pyramidal structure on top. Latitude – 33 27.80; Longitude – 118 29.40. Distance 34 NM.
SUNDAY, Aug. 20 -- Starting sequence times are one hour later, starting at 11:50AM.
START: The Starting Line will be a 90 degree line from the northern most point of land on Ship Rock. Boats "Over Early", noted by the same vociferous bellowing by fellow sailors, must return and start properly AFTER all boats have crossed the start line.
COURSE: Proceed on a course of approximately 349 degrees. No torpedoing of container ships allowed which are on a collision course with your boat in the shipping lanes. On approaching Marina del Rey, keep 2ES buoy well to Starboard. It is located 3 miles from the finish line and borders considerable hazards. The finish line will be at the South Entrance to the Marina. Note your time when the detached breakwater light is exactly 90 degrees to your Port. Report it to the committee boat. South Marina entrance light - Latitude – 33 57.77; Longitude – 118 27. 57. Distance, nothing has changed, the same 34 NM back!
