Cabin Table

I built this to replace the OEM table in an Ericson 27 "Can Do II" that I rebuilt.

The original table assembly weighed 47 lb and was stowed in the head compartment, necessitating moving it from its stowage area and fitting it into clips on the cabin bulkhead.

The new table is exactly the same size, weighs 17 lb total and is hinged on the bulkhead.

I constructed it from a sandwich of Mahogany door skins and 1/2" Baltec balsa coring (commonly used as deck coring), all glued with epoxy thickened slightly with Fumed Silica (aka Cab-O-Sil).

The edging is common white wood (1" x 1") that is rabetted 1/2" and rounded over on the outer edge. I steam bent this edging to form the curved sections. The Balsa was set-back 1/2" all around to allow for the edging to be inset.

I placed a 3" x 1/2" solid piece of mahogany in way of the main leg hinge in the bottom leaf.

The edging was also glued using epoxy as above.

Final finishing was 2 coats of System Three "Clear Coat" penetrating epoxy, followed by 2 coats of System Three laminating epoxy to provide a durable surface. Once that was sanded smooth, I stained everything with Zar Teak Natural and finished off with 4 coats of water based Polyurethane (my normal finish product on cabin woodwork).

Table_1.jpg shows (not very well unfortunately) the balsa laid out on one skin and the solid mahogany piece in place.

Table_2.jpg shows the sandwich clamped up between the original table leaves... Unfortunately this caused a problem in as much as the originals were not perfectly flat (I forgot to check that point) and the resultant sandwich has a very slight warp.

Table_3.jpg shows the table stowed against the bulkhead.

Table_4.jpg shows the legs unfolded as they would be if both leaves were in use (see Table_6.jpg).

Table_5.jpg shows the table in normal use position.

Table_6.jpg shows both leaves unfolded.
