Siver Coins under The Mast

For those interested in perpetuating nautical traditions/superstitions, I offer the following.
It has been the custom of shipwrights, from ancient times, to place a silver coin or coins under the butt of a mast when stepping it. Many reasons are offered, successful voyage, luck, offering to Posiodon, passage over Styx, etc. I found a Canadian dime (1998) in my change and noted that it carries the image of the schooner Bluenose.(see:

It seems that it would be a very appropriate offering if you are of a mind to follow this custom.
