A New Shell In Town: Doors CS 5.1

Kerm Martian of Cemetech has released a new ASM Shell for the Ti83/84+ series calculators called Doors CS, but how does this shell stack up against current champion MirageOS?

Doors CS is your standard 'Ion Compatable' shell. Yes, we already have like 20 of these, but the difference with Doors CS is that it has a Microsoft Windows like interface, complete with Mouse cursor and everything. Of course, unlike a computer, the calculator does not have an actual physical Mouse, so you must use the arrow keys to move the mouse around on the screen. This is not as natural as it seems, and while a neat idea, the 'mouse' format just doesn't work well on a calculator.

Another thing about being a graphical interface is the fact that all of the program's functions are represented by little icons at the bottom of the screen. Now, unless you read the manual, you have no idea what these are supposed to do, and honestly, who reads the manual anyway? Also, each program has an oversized icon cluttering up your screen, and unlike windows, there does not seem to be support to use background images as sort of a Doors CS wallpaper.

As for stability, at this point I would say it's iffy at best. After using Doors for just about an hour, I experienced various crashes and even had to remove my batteries including the backup battery after Doors killed my calculator. When it works, it works, but more often then you'd like, it doesn't work.

Here is the bottom line. If you love to see a Windows clone on your calculator (complete with system crashes and everything) and you like fiddling around with your arrows trying to control a hard to see mouse pointer, then give Doors CS a try. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and stick with Mirage.

Bottom Line: 3/10 - Nice Try 1
