"Max-why do you love me?"
He looked slightly caught off guard by her question but his hesitancy was not
due to uncertainty, more towards finding the right answer.
"Well..."
She turned around and looked at him with her big brown eyes, very curious and
expectant.
"Its hard to put into words."
"Try," she taunted him as she whispered in his ear, playing with the hair at
the nape of his neck. They were sitting curled up on her balcony gazing at
the stars, locked in a tight embrace.
"I love you because you're you."
"That's not a very good answer," she teased.
"It's the truth."
"Well, what do you like best about me?"
"I love your hair. Its always so soft and silky. It smells so good and I
love to run my hands through it." He illustrated this as he gingerly pushed
Liz's hair behind her ears and ran his hand across her cheek.
Now it was her turn, "Your eyes. The way you can stare deep into my soul.
No one looks at me the way you do, Max Evans. One glance and I can hardly
breathe. I get lost in your eyes and I forget anyone else even exists."
"I love to hear you laugh," he said, "to see your face light up brightens my
day. You're so beautiful Liz."
She blushed "If only you knew how handsome you are Max, inside and out....when
did you first know you loved me?"
"So full of questions tonight," he chuckled but again saw the seriousness in
her face. "From the minute I stepped off that bus in the third grade I knew
I was in love with you."
"But you didn't even know me!"
"Oh, but I did. I can't explain it, I just did. But now I really do know
you and I discover new things all the time. I fall in love with you more
everyday."
"I know what you mean," she leaned in and laid a gentle kiss on his lips--
how could a girl resist after a comment like that? "When you touched me Max,
I knew I would never be the same."
He nodded, he could remember that moment clearly. He had already told Liz
his secret but it was then that they really shared everything. They had seen
into each others' souls and they were still in love, if not more. They
stared off into the stars together as they spotted the V-shaped constellation
that had become so familiar.
Once again her questioning broke the silence. "What if you have to go home
Max?"
"I wouldn't," his answer came immediately, it surprised her.
"But--."
"This is my home Liz, here with you. I can't imagine ever leaving you."
She had to sit for a moment to take his decision in. It meant so much, more
than he would ever know. He was giving up a lot, possibly even the only
family he knew-Michael and Isabel, all for her. Tears began to seep from her
eyes.
He turned her around to face him, she was now in his lap. He was going to
tell her not to cry but knew it would make no difference. Instead he just
held her close to him. She could hear and feel the beating of his heart, it
beat for her.
"Thank you," she sniffled.
"No, thank you. Because of you I don't need to search for answers Liz. I
know that I'm here to be with you. This is my home, I'm sure of it." He
reached down to wipe away the tears. She half-laughed, half-sobbed at how
easily they had come.
She engaged him in a passionate kiss which he eagerly returned. Max deepened
the kiss as they became utterly lost in each other. Flashes were not
necessary, each knew the love the other felt. They had never been more
certain. It felt like an eternity until they finally stopped from
exhaustion. It was dusk now and they could clearly make out the others'
features.
"Marry me," he said.
"But Max, we're only seventeen."
"Not now, but promise me that whatever happens, we'll be married."
She knew that whatever happened her heart could never belong to anyone but
Max Evans. "I promise."
He smiled, content.
The sun began to rise in a cascade of colors and they watched entwined. It
was a new day, and the beginning of the rest of their life. Together.
"I love you Max."
"I love you too."
The sun rose but neither Max nor Liz noticed. The future was unpredictable
yet at the same time so certain. But Liz knew that as for all her
questions-they were answered.
