Boots With My Father's Name
EPISODE SYNOPSIS
Originally aired September 29, 1965.

The town of Stockton has erected a statue in memory of Tom Barkley.
For the unveiling ceremony Victoria would like for one of her sons to
wear a pair of Tom's boots, however, Heath is the only one who is able
to fit in them.

Because of his resentment towards his father, Heath chooses not to
wear them but decides to go to the ceremony anyway. After arriving in
town Victoria finds him drowning his sorrows, literally.

Having doubts about what their marriage had really meant to Tom
and wondering if he had truly loved Leah, she tries to ask him about
Tom's relationship with his mother but there is little information he
can gave give her.

Victoria heads to Strawberry to talk with his aunt and uncle and with
Hannah. While there Hannah tells her that Leah found Tom beaten
in an alley and nursed him back to health. She urges Victoria to leave
but Victoria can't until she finds out more.

Victoria visits Matt and Martha Simmons, Heath's uncle and aunt.
After trying to coerce money from Victoria by claiming that they help-
ed raise Heath, Martha vindictatively tells her that Tom did love Leah.

With a less than favorable impression of the couple Victoria leaves
their hotel and outside Hannah signals Victoria to follow her. Once at
Hannah's home, Hannah gives Victoria a letter written by Tom to
Leah, telling her that if the answers to her questions aren't there then
they aren't to be found.

THE LETTER THAT TOM

In Stockton, her sons and daughter are discussing where she might
have disappeared to. Heath has a suspicion and leaves without telling
his siblings.

Knowing that Victoria will be leaving and they won't see the money
they want, Martha has Matt hide Victoria's buggy. When Victoria finds
it gone she enters the hotel to ask where it is located.

Martha threatens that the same "mysterious" accident that took
Rachel's life might happen to Victoria also. Victoria tries to run for
the door and just as Matt reaches out to grab her Heath walks in. She
and Heath find the buggy and leave the town.

On the return trip to Stockton a man that had been hanging around
Strawberry attempts to shoot them at Martha's request but Heath is
able to kill him first. Victoria also reads the letter to Heath, sharing
with him that Tom never knew of his existence and secure in his
words to Leah that he loved his wife.

Although they have missed the ceremony, the final scene shows
Heath wearing his father's boots.

PERSONAL IMPRESSION
This is another one of my favorite episodes. Mainly because it reveals
a little about what occurred with Tom and Leah and was the beginning
of Heath learning to let go of the past and his anger.
EPISODE BLOOPERS
This episode has one of the most glaring booboos that I have noticed
in the series. Heath rode into Stockton on his horse so we assume
that he rode the same horse to Strawberry to get Victoria. However,
when they leave Strawberry they are both riding in the buggy that
Victoria drove to get there and Heath's horse is nowhere to be seen.
The same is true for the distance shot of them traveling back to
Stockton while Victoria reads the letter. But, when they arrive in
Stockton, poof, the horse is tied to the back of the buggy.
HEATH FILES
What can I say except that I have always thought Heath looked ab-
solutely yummy in his light brown tweed suit and that I have always
found episodes showing the mother/son bond between he and Vic-
toria to be particulary fascinating.
