Turtle breeding in Brookline MA

"Baby" hatched on Wednesday June 19, 2002 in Brookline MA.
Baby is a Kinixys belliana tortoise.  This is one small step closer to ensuring that rare turtle populations will be maintained.

" This high level of trade cannot continue indefinitely without depleting the wild populations. The breeding successes of tortoise keepers within the native range of the various Kinixys species indicate that it is possible to keep these chelonians in captivity. As a further example, three European zoos successfully produced captive-born Hinge-backs"   -- David T. Kirkpatrick, Ph.D

Here is a photo of Baby's first day in my Grandma's hand.

Here is a photo at 21days with proud parents (also Brookline residents).

The hatchling came from a clutch of 3 eggs laid Nov 30, 2001 incubated at 81 degrees F for one month then 84 degrees for the rest, with relative humidity maintained above 75%. The turtle breeder is Bunder Marie Wu (a human hatchling on Sep 15, 1991) who now attends Lawrence School.

Here are the three eggs. The one in the upper right is the one from which "Baby" hatched.
