Dawn Summers, 16, is The Key and Buffy's younger sister. After protecting The Key for centuries, the monks of the order of Dragon were forced to hide The Key from Glory by turning it into a human girl. They placed Dawn with the Slayer, knowing that she would protect it with her life  (indeed she did). Memories were implanted in Buffy and Dawn's lives that made it seem as if Dawn had always been a part of the Summer's family.
Joyce seemed to notice that Dawn was not her daughter at certain moments when she was being affected by her brain tumour. Dawn was initially unware of her true nature, but learnt the truth, much to her distress, when she broke into The Magic Box and read Giles' diary. Glory's aim in this world was to find the key -  it turned out that the key could break down all the dimensions barriers, and Glory intended to use Dawn in a ritual to get back to her own dimension. The ritual would result in Dawn's death, and unleashing of countless demon dimensions on earth. Buffy sacrificied her own life for Dawn's and was able to stop the world from ending and save Dawn's life and the worlds.
After Buffy came back from the dead, Dawn started feeling ignored and neglected. She then started stealing things and then Buffy found out. Buffy hasn't spoken to Dawn about this yet.
When the world was about to end for another time, but the reason this time was Willow, Dawn was sent to Spike's to be looked after but by this time Spike had left town.. in fact left the country and was left with Clem instead.
When Dawn finally convienced Clem to take her to Rack's place she went looking for Willow to talk to her. Dawn found Willow but Willow just tried to tortment her. Willow cornered her and told her she was going to drain her of the Key's energy and when she was gone nobody would miss her yelling and whinning. Buffy found the two of them and tried to sort things out with Willow but instead Willow transported them back to the magic box.. Buffy and Willow fought and then Willow trapped Buffy and Dawn in a whole where they had to fight for their lives against demons. There were too many demnons for Buffy to fight against alone so Buffy asked Dawn if she will help and in return she helped  and showed off her fighting skills by decapitating her first demon. Dawn had learnt her skills by watching her sister fight.
After Xander talked to Willow and said he loved her, the demons disappeared and the world didn't end. Buffy told Dawn that she didn't want to shield her from the world she wanted to show her it to her. They both climbed out of the hole and walked away into a landscape of beautiful trees and hills.
After Buffy admitted to Dawn she wanted to show Dawn the world not hide it from her, Buffy started taking Dawn on patrol with her and Dawn got a taste of what it was really like.
Dawn started to hang out with the scoobies a lot more and helped with solving and investigating each case or problem.
Besides Dawn going on patrol, her new big thing in her life was she would be going to the newly re-built Sunnydale High, which was built on the grounds of the old school. Buffy didn't really like the idea of her younger sister going to school on the hellmouth, so Buffy kept any eye on her. Dawn made two friends, Kat and Carlos and hanged out with them at school. Dawn had her own problems at school just like Buffy, Willow and Xander did.
When the new potential Slayers came to town, Dawn wasn't exactly happy because all teh attention was given to them and The First. Dawn didn't go on patrol or trained with Buffy anymore, Buffy had to train the potentials instead. Dawn was now starting to be neglected and not just by Buffy but everyone.
Dawn just felt neglected after everything and when she thought she was a potential she saw hope that she would get attention again and would be notcied for once. When Dawn released she wasn't a potential, she handed over the position to Amanda without any fuss. Xander talked to Dawn after about how he was never in the spotlight and how he never had super powers etc. and it's ok to be like that and told Dawn she wasn't special she was extraordinary.
Dawn kept going to school until things were getting so out of hands taht she didn't really go any more because she was helping with researching things about The First and then Caleb came along and she was helping out with that. She was like a jnr. Watcher.
When it was the day of the final battle, Buffy went to say good luck etc. to Dawn, she wouldn't let her say anything because Dawn felt that no matter what she said to her it would just sound like good-bye. So as she did her bit fighting the good fight, she survived the batlle alongside Buffy, Giles, Xander, Willow, Faith, Wood, Andrew and soem potentials. They make it out of Sunnydale as it falls apart and they stand looking at what is left of their town. Dawn's future awaits for what will come her way next.
